About : Part of a series of comics, as the origins of the zombie virus is in another comic series. The “Marvel Zombies” follows a collection of superhero zombie who hunger for human (or mutant) flesh. Set slightly into the future the comic centres around a few main zombies. Captain America (or Colonel America as he’s known in the zombie series. He’s almost the “Superman” of the Marvel world (Superman being a DC creation)), Giant Man (superhero power to shrink or grow at will), The Hulk (along with zombie Bruce Banner. Power are super strength when hungry as oppose to angry), Iron Man (Rich billionaire Tony Stark with super power suit), Luke Cage (no real powers, just kicks ass), Spiderman (…do I really need to tell you?), Wolverine (Powers of a indestructible skellington and regenerative powers) and The Wasp (like “Giant Man” but goes more small than big) are introduced chasing Magneto as they fancy a spot of lunch. After a chase they corner Magneto and spot The Silver Surfer inspecting the planet. The rest of the story really revolves around the zombie figuring out how to eat the Silver Surfer and eventually his master. Resulting in much zombie superpower based fights.
Review : A real divider of opinions, the one hand it’s a rather interesting twist from Marvel to go for a zombie story. They do alot but mostly with zombie characters or Evil Dead people but not main Marvel characters. On the other (being a big lover of zombies) there’s just some things I can’t let go. The main of which are the zombies brains, as in their still aware of their actions and can reason, talk and in general still be classed as people …. well apart from the whole “eating people thing” and “rotting”. An example is Spiderman, during the comic he becomes a bit of a moaning git as all he seems to do as he morns the loss of his wife (Mary Jane) and Aunt (May). Even though he was the one who ate them. The principal thing with zombie are their stupid, all distinctions of humanity are removed to create a dead eating machine, in the Marvel Zombies this doesn’t exist. Then again be a really dull comic if all they did was walk about going “gaarrrr” and grabbing at anything that moves.
The comics themselves are fairly short, around 20 pages or so. Which for the price tag is steep ($2.99 USA) which would price many people but fans of zombies, marvel or the artist and writer out of it.
Onto comic art and style, both of which are lovely. The gritty and dark backrounds work well with the few remaining torn brightly coloured super suits that remain. Also the feeding part are nicely done. Not so gorey as to freak someone out but enough so you get the point.
Overall : 7/10 The cost and the whole “thinking zombies” thing throws me. I’m a zombie fan though so it brings it back a bit for me.
