Zombie Classification.
Welcome reader to another zombie based thread. This week’s thread titled Zombie Classification shall teach you (the reader) about how to spot and class a zombie. As it often a thought what sort of zombie is currently eating my legs? by many a zombie faced citizen.
Simple spotting of a zombie may seem easy at first but the little differences show a zombie for its type as well as its threat.
Here are a few things to look out for when spotting your basic undead zombie.
Please note; some of these points are type specific.
Glazed over look without getting the zombies attention, try to look at its face. A zombie will have a very blank glazed over look to its face (what little of that there may be) until faced with flesh.
Moan the deep zombie moan comes from what little is left of the lungs and vocal cords. Although lungs are unneeded on many zombies they are still used for the deep moan. Some believe that the moan is used for calling other zombies to food, other believe it just to be a remnant of their human lives.
Missing Limbs Many zombies (apart from more recent ones) will more than likely have limbs missing, either from rotting off or being pulled off. When a zombie looses a limb then there is no blood loss due to it either leaving the body else were or being clotted up.
Pale or grey skin as the body shuts down the skins blood vessels loose their vital supply of blood so the skin becomes cold and turns a very grey pale colour.
Exposed organs much like the missing limbs, exposed organs happen either from when the zombie became a zombie or via the zombies own shuffling.
Being on fire with no pain although the site of a zombie on fire is slightly humorous it does give perfect indication to it being dead or alive. When a zombie is on fire it feels no pain due to being dead. The added advantage to a zombie on fire is it is easy to spot and requires no real attention.
Little response to objects in path human’s thing so if an object is in a human’s direct path then they will go round or over it. Zombies do not (depending on type); instead they will fall or walk into said object and either fall over then flail about a bit of just walk off.
Limp As a zombie rots it tends to loose all its details movement so its primary walk is a limp or shuffle walk.
Now you know how to spot a zombie (in a general sense) now it’s time to classify a zombie more clearly.
Voodoo Zombies these are the least common you’ll meet but have the most important note about them. DO NOT ATTACK! A voodoo zombie is a person and in no way dead. The voodoo zombie I a person under an intense hallucinogens dose (administered by a zombie priest or houngan) and who’s body can enter a state zombie like state (shuffling, moaning) or their bodies shut down to a degree and can be classes as dead. That is until the effect ware off only to be partially brain dead from being in a casket. If they are able to break out (shallow grave) or are heard and un-dug they are in a zombie like state from the brain damage. In both cases the human/zombie is more human than dead in that they react to sounds or commands. This is different for each zombie depending on the strength of the hallucinogens as well as any brain damage endured. In any situation do not attack a voodoo zombie.
Solanum Virus Zombie The more common and one of the worse types of zombies to encounter. Solanum zombies are created from the living so the idea of hands coming out the ground does not happen. The solanum virus can only be passed fluidly by blood and saliva. Other fluids are thought to do the same but few tests have been carried out. Solanum works by entering the host body then making its way to the brain. Once there it will begin to kill all functions but the very base ones it needs. These are shut down last. Solanum takes around 7-20 hours to reanimate a person from infection to rising. An infected victim can be spotted by the signs of pain and discoloration around open wounds, high fever and joint pain, numbing of the extremities, slowed heart rate and finally death. After an hour or so after death the Solanum virus will take over the parts now left for dead and re-animate the body. Little is know to how this is done but it is thought that the Solanum creates its own energy by feeding off cells that are not needed for functioning then taking the energy and using them for base body functions.
The upside of the Solanum zombie is that it is as dumb as a sack of rocks. A Solanum can be seen as a program that will do one thing (feed) until it either fails or shuts down. A Solanum zombie holds no thoughts from its life and is a walking eating machine. This does mean it is easily foiled by fences or by you (the reader) running away quickly. The downside is that because it is stupid it holds no fear. Weapons, fire, chemicals, all hold no fear for a Solanum zombie as well as the fact that Solanum zombies never tire or have to sleep. This is their biggest strength.
Solanum zombies thought are just human. They do not posses super strength or speed but were as a human will stop when they are in pain a Solanum zombie will keep going till its arms fall off (in the literate sense).
Raised Dead Zombie a more classic zombie (in the public eye) is the raised dead zombie. Much more uncommon now (due to strong caskets and deep grave) these zombies are anything dead reanimated back to life. They are seen as more a curse upon the world than a virus. This is the burst out the ground type of zombie. Anyone dead will be reanimated to life to feed on the living (what ever living thing is about). Were as with a solanum zombie you can just wait it out, they will always be about. The best bet is to just run and survive. Easy to spot as they are normally very rotten and coved in dirt depending on the time of death for the zombie in front of you. All studies have come back with no results as to why this type of zombie exists but some extremists believe it to be the world healing itself of the human virus, who knows.
Slow Rot Zombies Very new in the zombie classification world. The slow rot zombie is the most human out of all zombies. They retain most of their fine motor skills as well as being able to run. They truly are your worse nightmare unless you can run like the clappers. A combination of everything really they can be recently dead or changed via a bit. The recent changes keep most of their motor skills until the tissues being to break down in the muscles and the skills are lost. Thought to be from a modified or mutated strand of solanum viruses these zombies come from reanimated dead but it happens much quicker so retaining skills although no memories are retained just muscle use.
Smart Zombies My personal choice (from a research view) of study in all the zombies is the smart zombie. This type of zombie is more like an undead child. In that although the major motor functions are lost they can learn how to do some tasks. Ranging from simple tasks such as sorting shapes to more complex task like a rubix cube (it was a personal study. my trained zombie Stuggs was shown how to solve a fixed cube in that it was always set a specific way of over 30 twists and turns. Stuggs could solve the cube in min of 5 hours). These zombies after some time try to take back their lives (or the live of were they are) and try to live to a degree by doing what the people who were there before them would have done. By no means be fooled they will still hunt you for flesh but when left they have been seen to be doing basic human tasks. Apart from the added intelligence they are the same as solanum virus zombies but more toward the rotted end of the spectrum due to the amount of time it take them to learn. I say learn but it has never been found if they learn or recall information they used to have. Either way they are still more or less the same as solanum and raised dead zombies.
Larva Zombies - A relatively new comer to the zombie world as one of the most important. The larva zombie is in fact the only one which is known to be entirely created by man himself. Created by Dr R. Barnaby via a mistake while attempting to reduce the cost of cattle breading by mass producing livestock. This resulted in a parasitic insect (like a wasp or hornet) which can turn any person into a zombie regardless of them being dead or alive. In fact cases have been found where a person will turn while still very much alive and healthy and will be totally aware of the fact that they are turning. Through some research the signs tend to be an increased hunger and the loss of reasoning abilities on the part of the person turning. They have been a recent outbreak of them in Willamette in Colorado where a large area was overrun with zombies. Signs to spot a larva zombie are they basically flesh hungry zombies. The basic head shot still works well as well as general massive damage to the zombie. Removing limbs is not advised as the zombie will still struggle around on the floor clawing for your flesh.
There you have the five basic zombie classes. There are more classes but their number are small or they have been made in captivity for projects such as military use. Although the facts on these army zombies are scarce.
Wow, that was a really long zombie post. Going to do on on vampires next?
Sorry no can do. I do Zombology not vampire study. Mark is the vampire expert.
Maybe I should cobble a Vampire blog post together at some stage.
When it happens I’ll let you know.
How can a zombie with no motor skills and reasoning skills solve an rubiks cube.
Is there any organization i can join to help stop the spread of the undead?
No, but you can see my blog for the Zombie Panic Source Mod, which is a game I’ve been enjoying a lot even though I’m taking a break to not get bored of the launch maps.
