Bioshock is out today and it seems to be kicking up a bit off a fuss. Not the normal drugs, sex and violence way but beacuse they seem to have made a bit of a hash of a few parts of the game system, not the playing but the way the game works.
So far there have been three big problems that have annoyed the drooling masses who wish to play the new game.
Widescreen - Alot of people have gotten mad over this but the game isn’t strictly widescreen. I mean it’s in the options but it’s a bit of a has of a job. Rather than make “true” widescreen where you can see more left to right, the bioshock team decided to do it differently. They take the regular image size and chop the top and bottom off then fill the screen with the resulting image. Really meaning widescreen players get LESS total viewing area. Seems to have annoyed a few people.
In Bioshock, you only install TWICE! - Oh this is a good one, basically you can only install bioshock twice UNLESS you UNINSTALL the game 1st before you format, move files, or generally mess with the game. If you screw up then you got to go buy a new game. It’s all to do with the protection settings on the game and how restrictive they are. Instead of having an account such as in Half Life your game is listed as installed. So when you format and not un-installed the game your boned. So if your HDD goes tits up or you forget to un-install the game then you’re bugged. Lovely, isn’t it.
Bioshock KILLS PC’S! (Oh noels!) - Okay, not strictly true but still a damn funny read if you ask me.
Bar that lot there the shader issues too. I mean, I know games are complex things but these aren’t even testing issues some of this is slight laziness on the side of the people who make the game then getting paranoid about people copying the game. Rather than use a system such as Steam (which I think Bioshock might be coming to, might help a few problems) to relive copy issues they used their own system thats just a pain in the arse to use.
you know what really gets to me? People will just put up with it. We may be the consumers but for nice pretty system killing graphics we will swallow about anything. I mean look at Carbon, it’s a crap game but it dose look very very pretty.

I hate this type of DRM. The software company is so obsessed with stopping the game being copied, that they’re quite happy to shaft their customers to make sure it doesn’t happen.
Well I’ve heard murmurs that it’s already been cracked wide open.
So that lasted. People who copy and steal the game can use it as much as they want. People who buy the game screw up on installs and their boned.
I’ve pre-ordered and pre-loaded this via Steam (I like paying in US dollars for stuff in the present climate) so I’ll let you know how my install and play goes, although I don’t have a wide-screen display so that little cheeky shortcut won’t effect me.
I tottaly agree with you, If I boned my bioshock instalation, i’d just download a craked one.
Take’s the %$&*
