B.A.’s basic super quick review of Portal for the Pc.
I say quick as I’ve been drinking Dr Pepper and eating cake for a while and I am slightly wired now.
Right,
Portal - Basics - You (test subject) are given the job of testing the “portal gun” which has the great power to make a portal from A to B. Nice and simple at 1st then it’s get freeking mind bending as you find out from GLaDOS (the games slightly sexy computer voice) you retain any speed into a portal comes out a portal meaning you can fly with some quick portal aiming.
Portal - Quick review - Short enough to enjoy. Long enough to be funny. Really good but mind bending.
Thats it. You want more then …. meh!
~~~EDIT~~~
Okay, now I’m slightly less wires time for a slightly more in depth review.
As stated the basic story is you testing the portal gun in the clean world of Enrichment Center. You do test under the watchful eyes of GLaDOS. As you progress things become odd and GLaDOS starts to say weird thing and the Enrichment Center ….. well play the damn game. I don’t want to spoil it.
Anyway, review. The game is criminally short and you can rip though the game in a few hours with no real trouble. If you do that you really spoil it for yourself beacuse you won’t get the full extent of the portal guns power.
To define a true portal is made by bending space (none of the wooshy hole crap like in stargate) it’s removing the space between two points (so it would be A-space-B). A proper portal remove the space so points A and B become the same point. Much like walking through a doorway. This sounds slightly cool but the true power come from portals can be placed almost ANYWHERE. I had a moment where I had a portal on a low roof connected to one pointing down looking at myself. It’s truly mind bending play at times and more so when you start portal-ing while coming out of another portal. The portal gun has a good high fire rate so you can make a portal pretty much instantly in front of you while flinging yourself through the air.
This portal-ing result in you can if you really want to skip entire puzzels. One features an energy pellet to start a lift. Take about ten mins to do the puzzle or if your clever you can fling yourself over to the lift yourself. It’s a great idea and really alot of fun.
The downside to this is the game is short and a bit simple in some places. Later on there are some tricky bits but once you’ve done them once the most you can do is figure out new ways to do them as the game is so short. Luckily the game is rather open so new levels and mods will be coming out the wazoo in no time.
So in summary, damn good. Damn DAMN good but too short. Still long enough to enjoy mind.
Score : 9.5/10I do really like it. And the GLaDOS voice is sexy.
“the games slightly sexy computer voice”
Glad it’s not just me!
Bloody brilliant game if you ask me. Totally addicted and love the cake mocking stuff! The level over the long pit of deadly stuff did it for me - waiting for the ping of the energy ball and releasing it to the receiver thing by firing a portal down the corridor. I’ve just got to the level with the droids.
“I’ve just got to the level with the droids.”
Oh man the droids freaked me out. Their too chatty and the sounds and actions make them sound too innocent….till they shoot you in the arse.
Evil things……..and now I return to playing. Sod Hl2:Ep2
I am totally stuck on this level - I’ve tried for 10 mins to get round the droids - whats the deal with the secret room with someone’s scratchings on the wall?
I have a load of boxes at my disposal. Will try again when I get home from work.
I never got round to playing lost coast or ep1 so have LC, EP1 + EP2 to look forward too!
Ah, a few tips then. LOOK UP! Above the droids. It might help.
As to the holes in the Enrichment Centers walls….well you’ll see.
Enjoy your cake.
