I’m back.
After 3 days of on an off internet, it’s currently back on…for now.
So a GLaDOS post, for the few of you who have been living under a rock with a mole in each ear going “la la la” I shall explain that GLaDOS is from the Portal game by Valve which I did a wired review on a few days ago.
Anyway, I installed GCFScape on my PC and started poking around the files in the steamapp directory on my pc. Now GCFScape allows you to see into all of them big compressed files and take stuff/copy stuff out of them. Like all the sound bites for example.
So I had a poke around and found some cool stuff. Best of which is GLaDOS’s cake recipe. It’s really bizzare bit of listening. It starts off nice enough with “cake mix”, “vegetable oil” then it get random. “fish shaped crackers, fish shaped dirt, fish shaped organic volatile compounds” then a long list of resins and it carries on. It move on to rhubarb, books and keeps rolling though the ingredients. It’s really odd to listen to. On top of that are all the used (and I think) unused stuff right up to the GLaDOS eyes clips.
Also, the full set of turret clips. Again they make for great and random listening.
Oh bugger it, a small guide to finding them.
1,) Head HERE and download the GCFScape then install.
2,) If you associated the files then head to “D:\Steam\steamapps”
3,) Double click “portal content” GCFile.
4,) Navigate to Root>>potal>>sound>>music
5,) Clicking “music” (on the right plane, I’d do screens but my pc won’t let me) and right click “extract” then give a directory to extract to.
6,) Thats the tention music played during the game. Now for turrets and GLaDOS. Head to the “portal english” GCFile and double click.
7,) This file is 90% of the spoken stuff in the game. GLaDOS and turrets. In the “portal english” head to root>>portal>>sound
8,) The two files here are “npc” which is all the turret stuff and “vo” with contains a file with all the GLaDOS stuff.
9,) Extract them as before.
10,) Listen with glee.

Played through the whole game and it’s great fun. I love the way they made the turrets really cute as if being shot at was meant to be a fun experience. It’s odd how the voice actress sounds so much like GLaDOS before they apply the audio filters…
Very nice. Also, one other noteworthy sound, the thankful toilet, found in : portal content > sounds > ambient > machines > usetoilet_thank.wav
