Review : Jellyfist is the awaited new comic from Vasques, and really has a fair bit to live up to from my point of view. I’m a great fan of Vasques’s previous work (that being Invader Zim, Johnny The Homicidal Maniac & Squee) so I expected a fair bit.
The comic itself is a nice small little collection of random comic events, some of them could be seen as normal but thanks to the very Maxwell Atoms style of Goldburg’s art style it’s as weird as you can get.
An example would be the rear cover picture. It shows a xray of a …. person with a head full of bees. The comic from this is just about a guys head full of bees, powerful bees. Or the early comic which what can only be described as a giant mushroom with butted toast for a face.
Luckily, along with the madness each comic has a side indent with comment done as a conversation between Vasques and Goldburg. Which works rather well, even they are confused by their own comic creations of weirdness.
I came to this comic hoping for more of the same from Vasques, sick humour which includes ham and a heaven where people can explode each others head. Jellyfist is nothing like that, if you want more Johnny The Homicidal Maniac & Squee style comics then you’ll be disappointed by Jellyfist. Jellyfist is more like Invader Zim but a bit more out there. It’s funny and random but that’s what makes it good.
Summary : If your a hardcore Johnny The Homicidal Maniac & Squee fan then you might want to look else where. Maybe Roman Dirge would be more the thing you should go for. If you want something good, silly and a bit Invader Zim like then Jellyfist is excellent for it. It’s short, random and good. Can’t ask more than that can you now then.
