As a few of you know, I’ve been playing Bioshock over the past few weeks. All so far has been well. I’ve been merrily walking around the steam punk world of Rapture with my plasmids and shots gun, blasting the crap out of anything that moves.
Now I’ve come upon a problem, a problem seen in most games.
Crossbow Syndrome.
Allow me to explain, I’m simple. Therefore I tend to stick to simple weapons in games. In Bioshock my main weapons are fire plasmid, electricity plasmid and finally my shotgun.
My shotgun is currently a work of bloody art! It shoots electric buckshot, explosive buckshot and regular stuff. It’s got a fast fire rate and updated damage. It’s a marvel of my weapon collection.
It sucks complete and UTTER balls.
I’ve been saved by a random scientist. I’ve had my plasmids f’ed with. So I’m using my guns allot more. I sort my messed up plasmid problem and INSTANTLY my shotgun is a pile of crap. Not just “seems to take more effort to kill stuff”, no no. I’m pounding 4 rounds into stuff and it’ won’t die. Big Daddy’s for example. I used to take one down with my shotgun with little trouble. Now, I can’t scratch them with the shotgun unless I want to get chucked around the map. Hell, my bee power (WHOOP) does more damage!
So, what in my arsenal is now my most powerful weapon?
My chemical sprayer?, no. My machine gun?, no. My grenade launcher?, no.
It’s … (drum roll) … a crappin crossbow, a little thing that shoots pencils at people.
Lets get some prospective here. A Big Daddy is a very large, diving suit (or ARMOR suit) coved, super powered killing beast. I can pump 6-7 round of EXPLOSIVE buck into one and drop him. That’s explosive buck. Goes boom.
Take my crossbow out, 4 shots. I can pump 6-7 round of explosive buck into it and only just kill one. I shoot 4 pencils at it and it drops. Not like they even penetrate as you can go pick them back up again!!
Why the hell do games do this to me! Look at Half Life (1 & 2) one of the most powerful guns in the game is a crossbow. Like the poor mans sniper rifle but slower. I’m not sure about you, but if I got shot with a crossbow from a long distance I’m semi sure I’d be pissed off, not failing about dead.
I mean come on! It’s a damn shotgun and a crossbow. A shotgun that fires lightning.
Stupid games.
I’m going to take my frustration out on some little sisters. They deserve to be harvested now.

Ok lets assume you know something about guns.
OK a buck shot has Zero Armor Penitratin.
(You would expect that explosive might do a bit but its mostly impact damage.)
A supper high tension crossbow can get its bolt to about 450kph and the bolt will weigh about 2.5 times more than a machine gun bullet that means that if you dont have a muzell velocity of over 1200kph (not may guns do this i AWP from CS teritory)
Now depending on the tip you could take out thin kevlar at at least 400m. Remember Crossbows were the wepon of choise verses heavy knights (
That may be true, but I’m a point blank sorta person (also a fairly crap sniper in game).
Point blank buck shot is going to do more than a single arrow. Arrow would go through fairly cleanly, shotgun is going to blast a fair chunk off.
BUT! I have a new tactic now. Ice blast + buck = ice cubes.
