I did an animé run-down but this time I’m going to properly recommend some animé. Like a “must see” sorta list.
Now, some of this is the English but I’m going with allot isn’t licensed yet in the America’s so some you’re going to have to find yourself.
Anywho, lets rock.
Cowboy Bebop - MUST BE SEEN IN ENGLISH - A simple story about a few bounty hunter who chase anyone with a price on their head. Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, and Ed(ward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV). Simple, oh and their in space and the earth is screwed so people mostly live on Mars.
I LOVE Cowboy Bebop and still do, it’s just a pure classic. Awesome soundtrack mixing blue and a little metal on occasion. With vivid backdrops and awesome character. It’s a very well grounded series. Where as most animes with space go full on lazers and giant robots, Cowboy Bebop doesn’t. It’s space a few years forward, so space ships aren’t these amazing things their junk that need a good boot to keep running on occasion.
You learn to love all the people in the show and their problems, like Faye’s gambling problems and weird past. It’s just a really good series. It still stand up well now when put against other series that get churned out now.
Pick up a copy, you won’t be disappointed. It has comedy, action, drama and it’s just a good laugh.
Neon Genesis Evangelion - Watch in English or Japanese. Rather go Jp myself - A might tall standing series in the world of anime. It’s a series that has a massive fan base and one of the few that is going to become a WESTERN live action film (which will suck).
The story again set in the future follows Shinji Ikari a slightly wimpy….well very wimpy kid who’s had a bit of a crappy life. Dad’s left him, mother has died, then he gets a call from his father and the story goes from there. So far you’re thinking “crappy” but I didn’t mention the giant ass kicking robot.
On the surface for the a large section of the series you can just go “ooow, robots” as for robot fight their rather bloody and violent but very fluid. The giant robots are called “Eva’s” which fight “angels” which are big things that just sorta blow crap up.
But NGE goes alot, LOT deeper with many religious undertones and lots of psychology as well from the point of Shinji and the other children namely Asuka Langley Soryu and Rei Ayanami. The relationships between these three makes a massive part of the series as they grow then it starts to go a bit wrong.
One note with this series, last say ten or so eps suck. This isn’t a writing thing it that the team making it (Gainax) sorta ran out of cash. So watch all the eps THEN the movies. The movies sort ALLOT of things out.
Ghibli - ANYTHING made by Ghibli - Ghibli are a studio, they are in fact a really good studio. The closest thing you could call them is the Japanese Pixar. They make beautiful films which alot of soul to them. They move you and draw you in. Top I’d say have a look at The Castle of Cagliostro, Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle. All classic, all brilliant.
FLCL - Watch in English and I WILL stab you - If you want you’re mind truly f**ked then you can do no better than the brilliant madness of FLCL. The story follows Naota, a young lad in a small town where nothing much happens. Untill a woman on a moped runs him down and beats him round the head with a guitar.
Then a robot comes out of his head fighting ANOTHER robot.
Then it gets weird.
Only six eps long but it’s just right. You’ll need to watch it a few times to understand any of it but you will enjoy it. If you’re not giggling with glee when a robot poops out a person then the mystery of the giant eyebrows on Commander Amarao will have you perplexed.
It’s funny, it’s quick, it’s violent. It’s FLCL.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - A sugar sweet cute series, it starts nice with people saying ~desu alot and it’s all lovely. Then people start beating their friends to death with a baseball bat then clawing out their own throats.
Lovely.
A very dark series really. It all seems nice but soon descends down in the to depths of madness. It’s a hard series to watch as it jumps around a bit but. JJW009 just watched the lot and loves it.
Well, that’s about it for now. Tune in next time for more animé.
Or not.
Ah bugger you. I’m going to have some jam on toast.
Akira
Spirited Away
Ghost in the Shell
UrotsukiDoji (if you’re 18+!)
Ninja Scroll
I’m sure there’s loads of other but they’re the ones that come to mind.
I’d add Hellsing [either dubbed or subbed] to the list… I’d recommend the 13-episode series first… then watch the OVAs [which there is currently 4 of] so you can appreciate how much of a tangent the series went off on…
I love Neon Genesis Evangelion but the English dub is rubbish they sound 2 old like the voice actors are in there mid 30’s trying to sound thirteen
@Phil. UrotsukiDoji, was alright in my younger days but it’s a scootch to the side of crap really.
@RedFlames. Hellsing series is awesome the music makes it perfect. I do like the OVA’s but they are taking an age to come out but they do follow the books better. Have to put that in Vol#2
@Iain. So true.
I didn’t think I’d get a good response to this post. Glad to see it’s going well.

Animes are only best watched subbed.. Death Note is a must see altho stay away from episode 36… worst way to end it (even if they did follow the manga’s)
