Past few nights I’ve been watching the old FMV from the Twisted Metal games. One thing that really stood out from them (apart from the really crap kiddy version) was how twisted and insane everyone is in Twisted Metal.
It’s the sort of twisted you don’t get any more in game. Currently the trend for most games is big tough lion eating games. The kind of game that puts you against 50,000 “bad guys” who you chop your way though for some nice reason, like save the world/land/random idiot scientists.
(Before the next bit, a little about Twisted Metal and what it is. Twisted Metal is a contest to the death where the winner gets a wish. Any wish in fact, regardless of worth or size or even reality. A prize like that attracts allot of people but the contest is to the death car battles. Anyway, that’s the basics of it)
Let’s look at an example from Twisted Metal Black, Charlie Kane & son. The son part is the main focus. You see Charlie Kane was one day driving his son in his cab (called Yellow Jacket) when a fare decided to shoot him. Leaving the son rather mental screwed over. You’d think the story from there would be the son wants win the contest and get his father back (that’s the sort of thing Calypso can do due to a weird ring). Well, it sort of is. Only thing is Charlie Kane’s son decided to wire his dead dad up and now controls him with a little controller.
He didn’t bury him, freeze him. Nope, he wired him up and moved him about with a controller.
Now, that’s a proper twisted little nut.
Look at games now and it’s just big all out war or just crap to drive the graphics along (Crysis, I’m looking at you).
Another example is Cage. Cage is one of the top “proper” nutters in the game as his wish is to have the part of his brain that makes him sad removed. He wants to be better than Sweet Tooth (a mass murder who drives an ice cream truck).
I mean, come on! Who dose this level of twisted nut jobs in games now! Bar perhaps the Condemned series but they gone off into the realm of fantasy (you shout the last boss to death … no really, you do!). Most game now seems to have gone the direction of bland, generic bad guy to plough through. Hell, most people don’t even care about the guy they are controlling. That’s how bland it starting to get.
Well, hopeful soon we’ll get another game on the same crazy level as Twisted Metal. I loved Twisted Metal Black. Big levels, nutters, death, destruction and no idiots harping on about it like GTA. Was the guilty treat in the back of the draw for when your inner nut job needed to soothed.
