Valve have updated TF2 again, lets have a look then.
See that last line, do you see it. DO YOU! Hear that noise? It’s the sound of every crap Pyro with a back burner going “Noooo”.
The Backburner gave the player 50+Hp. Which isn’t allot till you notice it props the Pyros health up to 225Hp odd. Couple that with a quick buff and you got a fire spitting thing with more health and speed than a Heavy. This created a race of what I shall call “Asshat Pyros” these APyros would rush anything (I mean ANYTHING) get at least one kill then die. This resulted in the APyros being annoying as hell but it seems Valve have noticed this and nerfed them.
Which is awesome. Only problem is now, no one will use the Backburner. Backburner now sucks, Flaregun has always sucked and the Axe isn’t too handy either. So now it’s all back to stock Pyros with force push.
Damn.
Author, I do not know if you read these comments or not, but the flare gun has so many hidden uses over the shotgun. It can be used to take down other pyros, harass snipers on 2fort (Or snipers in general), get a hit on sentries you can’t reach, and take down some classes that like you can’t reach ( Like a medic healing a heavy, This can be a great move to assist other classes, medic health regen is small, and this forces them to pop an uber, or run away from their buddy to go grab a pack. better yet, you kill the medic and then torch the buddy). Author, I suggest you practice with the flare gun some more, It’s like the Needle gun, it sucks to aim but becomes a great weapon once you get the hang of it.
P.S. The axe sucks mega balls.
Tis a sad day indeed.
Flare gun is great for bugging snipers btw. I’ve even managed to take out sentry guns with it while the engi was away.
By the way, I hated the +50 bonus to hp, on the back burner, and I love to play pyro. It was just unbalanced.
“Author,I do not know if you read these comments or not, but the flare gun has so many hidden uses over the shotgun. >, It’s like the Needle gun, it sucks to aim but becomes a great weapon once you get the hang of it.”
Yo, names Adam. I do read the comments.
Anywho, I prefer the shotgun. I’m an SHOCKINGLY bad shot. So that nice wide spread shotgun is my preference over the one shot flaregun. Also means I’m not screwed on water maps.
Seems to be much more Flaregun love than I though.
Saddly its a bit of a nasty NERF since the +50 HP may have seemed OP, you are talking about a class that requires on proximity to be more effective. Unlike most classes, the Pyro is forced to get really close and personal. Sure, there was an epidemic of APyros and this puts a halt to them, but now what? Flare gun is fun but I keep my trusty shotgun with me instead, the Axe is a joke and without the health boost I dont really see a need for a backburner, so in the end the Pyro just became se “so-so” class it was upon release.
The Pyro may have been a so-so class before the new Pyro achievements were released, but now they are a very solid class. How? Two words, compression blast. Pyros now have the ability to make ubers completely useless, they could push enemies off of control points, and if you are very good with timing you could reflect some rockets and grenades back at soldiers/demomen.
As for the Backburner Pyros… Backburners emphasize the whole thing of Pyros being an ambush class, originally Pyros were meant to stay unhidden and attack enemies from their blind spots and causing chaos on the enemy lines. And being able to crit their blind spots hurts ever more.
Great job Valve.
…
People angered at the backburner nerf seem to forget the purpose of the backburner.
Valve put the weapon in the game for AMBUSHING pyros. Not Apyros. Now, you can’t just run into a tunnel randomly and get 5 kills with no strategy. Darn. Bringing some skill and strategy back into a class? How dare you valve. How dare you. The flare gun is somewhat balenced compared to the shotgun. Trading damage and accuracy for range, the big weakness of the pyro. The flare gun sometimes causes people to back off thinking they are going to die from the fire damage. The Axe is actually pretty useful in teams, but it’s more for having fun then actual usefulness. I’m happy they nerfed the pyro’s 50 health thing. Taking 3-4 rockets to kill a pyro removed the pyros biggest counter, soldiers. The compression blast can counter this too, but it actually takes some skill to counter soldiers, and good soldiers can still kill pyros who aren’t good with the compression blast. People whining about how the pyro “needed” the buff seem to ignore why valve put the backburner in the game. Not to make the pyro an unstoppable killing machine, but to make the pyro have two different playstyles. One ambushing, one the more standard pyro class.
I think that for a while it’s going to be mostly Pyros back to stock, then an intresting breed of ambush Pyro pops up.
So give it time, should work out.
Although, that 50+ should be lumped onto the Krtiz gun. Just when a medic fires it off he gets a 50+hp for the time of 10secs. Think it would help a scootch.
Have got to say that when Valve released the upgrade for the pyro i was excited at the prospect of new weapons which turned to a major bummer when i went onto any server and there were 10000’s of pyros. But luckily that has now slowed down and i doubt ill chase the other upgrade since i usually only play as pyro, medic or sniper. Ive got to agree with other post tho … the flare gun is really handy for sniping soldiers, demomen etc that are raining grenades etc when your defending. That and killing soldiers with rebounded rockets is good fun. Ochayethenoo
The nerf makes me sad, but I think it was necessary, and I’ve been expecting it since the backburner was released. And for those of us who enjoy ambushing, its still great. The problem with the health bonus: it made the backburner the same as the Flamethrower Before the update, but with more health. Even a noob who rushed straight on with the backburner could get a few kills because of the boost. Now backburner-users will have to be more tactical.
P.S. To anyone who dislikes the Axtinguisher: I find it to be the greatest of the pyro update weapons. If you get the combo right (burst of flame –> axe hit) you can kill almost all classes in 1 hit, even the soldier (the initial burst will probably cause enough damage to add up to 200). It’s really useful in tight situations, especially in 1 on 1’s.
quote from Majin Vegeta:
I think with the recommended weapon sets there can be two schools of thought on the subject…
1: Flamethrower/Flare/any Axe -
Tech Pyro: This set allows the Pyro to fill in as a support class on the team; it allows him to use the air blast to break apart ubers, as well as clear points of stickies and defend the key classes from oncoming Rocket/Demo spam. The Flare gun disrupt Snipers and discourages other classes from advancing; most people that get ignited before the firefight will usually back off if the Medic’s absent/no safe health packs around.
2: Backburner/Shotgun/any Axe -
Ambush Pyro: This set is usually better for attack/defend maps, or just any map where you have a lot of flanking options that you won’t meet much opposition in. The Backburner can completely devestate a pushing team if used right, and with the extra health the Pyro has a very good chance of getting out alive and returning to sweep up the survivors while they’re still reeling from the last attack.
I have to agree with the author about the shotgun > flare gun. The shotgun is ridiculously underrated. Try playing Engineer for an extended amount of time and you’ll learn to love it. My only complaint is that it doesn’t have much of a knockback effect.
I can see some of the commenters’ points about the flare gun, though. Pyros are such an up close style class that the value of the shotgun is lowered so much when you have a huge flamethrower of death in your hands. The flare gun is definitely useful when you’re on one of the many open area maps and you’re being held at bay by snipers and sentries. But in a pyro vs. pyro situation, the shotgun’s always going to have a giant advantage over the flare gun.
