I’ve been doing a university thing to get some more points to get a degree thing (mmm, specifics). Anyway, so far the whole University thing has been a massive pile of crap and fluff. More fluff than any other thing I’ve ever done (Definition “Fluff” – A body of writing or text that really doesn’t mean anything to you).
So, here’s a rundown of my entire time at university so far. This is mostly made up of bits I can remember. So it’s going to be very rambling and crap.
Class 1. Ice breaker and meeting people. Also a thing on what you want from the class. Then lead around at 8.00pm at night to look at buildings. Why? I have no idea. I also add, the university is around 60mile round trip for me after college from 9.00am till 4.30pm.
Class 2. Hey look more people. Oh feck, another ice breaker. Fantastic.
Class 3. “How to use the internet” … no I’m not kidding.
Class 4. PowerPoint. God damn PowerPoint.
Class 5. Plagiarism bad! Don’t do it. We’ll find out, when we do we eat you’re soul. Feck! If you don’t get university don’t like you copying work then you really shouldn’t be there.
Class 6. Bibliography. Yep, that’s one whole unit. A one page bibliography.
Class 7. Feasibility study. Okay, that took some effort.
Class 8. Moved to Gt.Yarmouth College. This week, “reflective learning”.
Class 9. Skipped it.
Class 10. Skipped it.
Class 11. Skipped it.
Class 12. Handed in work. Get warning for “not being professional” in an email. Passed the unit though.
Class 13. Professionalism thing. It’s a big CV really and we finally get a GYCollege tutor who thing the 4 page brief is stupid as we do.
Class 14. Work on professionalism. Do a little in class and little at home.
Class 15. Same as 14.
Class 16. Same as 14. I see a pattern.
Class 17. Handed in work.
So there it is. My entire recollection of university life so far. It’s all crap and I hated 75% of it and still passed.
I’ve now got to make a PowerPoint presentation for my next unit. A single PowerPoint presentation. These aren’t little marks either, like 10 marks a unit here.
Higher education my arse.
Couldnt agree with you more. HE is a massive waste of time (and money). Ive just finished a teaching course. If you average the actual hours i had in a classroom, being taught something useful, it was costing me £75 an hour.
Nitemare.
And i still cant get a teaching job!
I’ve just graduated and I can feel your pain, I don’t know which University you go to but I goto Kingston.
1st year is just for getting your basics right, and yeah I remember them teaching me something stupid like how to minimize and maximize in my very first lecture too. You may hate it, but look at it this way, 1/2 of the people in the course is still going to drop out after 1st year, its almost like a filter. And in case you haven’t noticed, University doesn’t even waste real lecturer’s time to teach you, they usually get Master’s student doing lecture slides that some real lecturer wrote years ago.
2nd and 3rd year is where the fun starts, 2nd year: project management, uml, gantt charts, critical decisions, HCI (what color to use and where to put buttons), java (depending on uni I guess), database etc etc
Then 3rd year is hardcore solo stuff, Internet Security, Advanced Java (Java frameworks like Struts, Spring, XML parsing etc), Ecommerce, Mobile Commerce, Radio Waves etc.
I’m in my graduate job now, and yes I still have to study becuase the technology my company want is so new that it was never taught in University, but thanks to the course and University skills of researching, learning new technology has become an easy task for me.
Grind it through my friend, worst thing you can do is to lose all motivation going into 2nd year and fall behind when they step up the gear.
No wonder you can’t get a teaching job. You can’t even spell nightmare.
Well i would disagree with you. Depending on the course of study and what you future ambitions are, University is not for everyone. Those who are really full on towards education would grab the opportunity straight away. Others which to me is like yourself, arent so sure, and so go by what you might think is expected.
Anyway aside that, the point is, university courses today are on offer to anyone, even if they havent studied anything remotely close to it before. Ideally it suits both international and national students too, as it starts the first year off getting used to your surroundings, and a relaxed approach, keeping you settled in, ready for the next two or more years at Uni.
My first year was quite easy too. Being a business orientated person, taking business for the first year was a breeze. But i think you’ll find it sharp jumps up a notch in the later years.
I see this young apple quitting in his second year, not because it is ‘crap’ but too hard.
Uni was awsome. Best time of my life. Yes I didn’t attend a great deal of lectures but passed everything and came away with some memories and friends I will never forget. Uni isn’t for everyone but I personally miss it to this day!
