After many months, I decided to get off my arse and finish off Bioshock!
It’s been a rather slow night, just fixing someone’s PC (f**king Vista Antivirus 2008 my arse!) and decided while it was going through a full AVG scan (took three hours in the end) I’d finish off Bioshock on the Xbox. Would have played TF2 but the guys where being arsed and picking on a guy called Knifey (I warn you now, I’m about to go off on a tangent).
Knifey you see is a teenager, a non-talking teenager and finds juvenile things funny and uses the occasional script which fails. He’s really not too bad a player, he can snipe like a man possessed but get bored decided to grief a bit. He dose this occasional, you ask him to stop he normally will or I tell him too, he was grief-ing an Admin till I pointed out it might not be the best of ideas. Then he built an SG outside of spawn on CP_Gravelpit. Really, it’s not a bad idea. You always get one spawn camping git who tries it on. Then Oli decided to have a go at him, few other people did and I tried to defend Knifey then left because I really couldn’t be arsed with everyone crap. Still, don’t see why they decided to bully Knifey, he’s not so bad. I can’t really talk; I’ve laid into some noob players before for being idiots.
Anyway! I digress, Bioshock.
/!\BIOSHOCK SPOILERS AHOY/!\
So, I finally decided to finish it. I was at the part where you have to become a Big Daddy and I needed the pheromone and the helmet. Left the helmet to last as I had a good feeling it was going to screw my vision, it did. So I picked up the last of my kit, killed some more splicers and went about my job of killing Frank Fontaine in his new Hulk/Adonis/Spliced nut job form.
I had already heard from my mate (Duke) that the boss fight was silly easy using the crossbow. So armed with my crossbow off I went. It’s a REALLY good opening to a boss fight. You come up in an elevator to see Frank hooked up to the plasmid machine, pumping various things into him. From the visual though, it all goes downhill. You run up to him and stab him with a Little Sister needle and he immediately thwacks you across the room then comes after you. He starts out with a fire plasmid, so I hit him with the ice and start in with the crossbow … which sucks.
So I (slowly) keep hammering him with the crossbow which has to be THE slowest reloading weapon ever. Then he runs back to the machine, I hit him with the needle again and then … he hits me again and it starts over. This time ice, I think “hey, ice won’t work now. Let’s try electric!” So I hammer him with electric plasmid and switch over to my lightning firing shotgun (my fav gun).
As you can guess, I shot him, he runs to machine, I stick him with the needle and … he hits me across the room. I started to get some déjà vu here, “Where have I done boss fights like this before, “X” number of hits for an opening … PLATFORMERS!”. Back in the old days, platformers had a pre-defined boss routine. Hit the boss three proper times to kill him. Much like what Frank here was doing.
Anyway, more ice, more shell and the big horrible bugger is on the floor. It was really a rather easy fight; I had more trouble using lava to evaporate some water earlier on in the game than I did during this boss fight.
So Frank is down, then he starts blabbing on then a load of Little Sisters jumped him and that was that. No, really that’s it. I got a nice little video at the end with the Little Sisters, (I saved them) which was lovely but the whole thing just ended. No nice titles and artwork, no extras, no slap and tickle. It just ended like that. The game didn’t even make a song and dance about it. I WANT A SONG AND DANCE DAMNIT!
So that was it, I was left a bit cold really. I greatly enjoyed my trip through the world of Rapture. It’s settings where just beautiful, the water, the animals, the gardens. It was a lush and joy to look at. I spent time on some levels just to have a look around. Oh, and, how could I forget, the Big Daddy’s. These lumbering beasts where just a joy for me to watch. I loved watching them walk around. Finally a thing that doesn’t always want to kill you, in the harsh cold world of Rapture where these things just caring for their Little Sisters, I really liked that.
Really, the end of Bioshock was bit crap really. The trip getting there was a different matter, the up, the downs and the insane people with glowing hook hands. This was a really good game for me. I like to explore and look around levels and Bioshock had looks in spades!
I’ll miss the big lumbering beasts of Rapture.
So I leave with the words of Andrew Ryan:
Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?
No, says the man in Washington. It belongs to the poor.
No, says the man in the Vatican. It belongs to God.
No, says the man in Moscow. It belongs to everyone.
I rejected those answers. Instead, I chose something
different. I chose the impossible. I chose…
Rapture.

Yep, no fecker is ever going to read all that.
It’s 0158… Read it all…
I read all of the bioshock stuff and some of the TF2 knifey stuff. I have never played TF2 but a friend gave me a week’s pass the other day for it and made me download the game and then the pass didn’t work so I deleted it again.
I started playing Bioshock a week ago after I decided some of the various forum comments about it being boring might be wrong. So after reading the games pot review I gave it a try and I like it a lot. I am pleased you found the big boss easy to kill because I need stuff to be easy to kill like the chavs are in my town.
So when I kill the big boss I will remember your needle stabbing strategy and hope it works for me too.
Looking forward to more Stalker after that.
Also would like to get back into 2142 again but I may need a new saitek stick and throttle + my life is quite busy with downloading of HD porn.
feathers633 - can you go from keyb/mouse to stick/throttle when playing battlefield (for the flying stuff obviously)? Might give it a whirl. Recommend a stick/trottle for me?
Anyway the blog… I read through it all and enjoyed it. Brought back some good memories for me. I got rid of the game once i’d completed it (Xbox) but you know what, I kind of miss rapture. I want it again. How many games have I ever ‘missed’ playing - being in the world - before? For that reason I think Bioshock is truly a remarkable game.
Hi,
You you can. That’s not a problem. I use the stick and throttle for aircraft and it gives very precise and natural control. Also used for the Battlefield 42 DC mod and I found I was clearing the sky of enemy aircraft using the HOTAS control.
I would recommend the Saitek X52. Either the standard or pro version if you can afford it. I have used the Saitek hotas for many many years (right back to the days of Janes F15).

I have modded my old office chair by taking off the arm rests and replacing with 2 long flat planks of wood to which I can velcro attach the stick and throttle. This means I don’t need to have them on a desk and it feels more natural.
I also use body vibration for all games and I wouldn’t play any game without it now. Search for Aura Interactor on eBay. Can use with any PC or console.
Also the final touch is a Fresnel lens to pull me into the game world.
