Save Kallen Damn it!

Big_Adam

Posted in Tv, Anime on July 25, 2008 at 10:01 am

Over the past few months I’ve been watching Code Geass. I love Code Geass since the first season. It was a bit like Death Note (in the idea of suspense) on what it did to me so the R2 season was a must.

So, the series has been plodding along. Lelouch has been attempting to overthrow the empire while attempting to still be a semi-normal (if slightly insane) school snob person. Which is all very lovely, I have no problem with it.

My problem is with Kallen Stadtfeld. Kallen pilot a knigmare frame (big robot) and was the ace of the Black Knights (Lelouch personal army of sort). Few weeks back now she was capture by the empire and has since been sitting in a fancy glass tube of a prison. Then left and not herd of since.

Pardon? You’ve leaving a main character along why? What the hells going on with that. Kallen had a good story going for her then she gets chucked in prison and nothing heard from her again. Lelouch not even uttered a word about getting her back!

This sort of thing annoys the hell out of me. Where a plot point is introduced then just sort of left to rot for a while leaving everything else to get on with it.

Just had to moan about that.

Yes, it’s late. Sue me.

Good: Clannad.

“Tomoya Okazaki is a third year student labelled as a delinquent. Everything seems to be unchanging for his school life until he meets Nagisa, and Tomoya finds that his life is about to change. He starts to have dreams of a bleak world and meets a girl who has the ability to fuse junk together in order to create things, and doing so, creates a body out of junk for him. He is then reborn into this empty world and follows around the girl, the only two existences who are “alive.”"

~Fansub TV~

Okay, Clannad. I ripped through this series in a few days (that’s good) and really enjoyed it. It’s a lovely moving anime that almost bought me to tears in one or two instances but I have one massive problem with it.

It’s like AIR.

Air is an anime I watched a while back now about a guy who enter a town, meets a girl, girls weird, stuff happens, guy turns into bird and the story loops. It had a very annoy “pardon, what happen?” quality. Luckily Clannad doesn’t have this … past 10 odd eps. The story starts (after some intros and what have you) with Fuko. A little girl with a thing about starfish. Really, I can’t say much but the story goes fairly screwed up and weird then just starts over without Fuko … sort of. It’s very weird, but still good.

Anyway, bar that Clannad is very nice. I loved every character in it and really enjoyed watching stories unfold in a nice little order and it was all very lovely if a bit sappy. Still, if you want some nice romantic (mostly romantic) with some comedy and don’t fell like watching the 20,000 ecchi school comedies then give Clannad a shot.

Mmmm, old school: Outlaw Star.

“Outlaw Star follows the outlaw Gene Starwind and his eleven year-old business associate, Jim Hawking. Together they run a small jack-of-all-trades business on the backwater planet Sentinel III. After the two take a job as bodyguards for a mysterious outlaw, they find themselves the owners of the XGP15A-II, a highly advanced prototype spacecraft, and the caretakers of a bio-android named Melfina. Through the course of the series, the crew grows to include the assassin “Twilight” Suzuka and Aisha Clan-Clan, a Ctarl-Ctarl and former Ambassador of the Ctarl-Ctarl Empire.”

~Wiki~

A bit of the old school for you, Outlaw Star. Been kicking about a while but I’ve just got back in touch with it so … meh.

A nice comedy mixed with a nice blob of action to keep everyone entertained. The story follows Gene the outlaw and his crew in search of the Galactic Leyline. Think pirates in space after treasure and your pretty much there. Just with more people and giant armed space ships … and castor guns.

The castor gun brings the silly-ness of magic into the mix. Gene owns a castor gun, it basically fire magic at people to achieve some random effect. Problem is the bullets are expensive and Gene is cheap, leading to hilarity.

Okay, some of the funny is a bit crap and the whole series has a bit of the Cowboy Bebop (was made just before though) and the animation is a bit shoddy and changes at times. BUT! The series has a nice bit of charm to it. It’s fun, silly and interesting. If anything it will keep you entertained while you’re watching and there some fan service if you need to go pocket mining at some point. I like this series, was one of the first anime I watched and it was on proper TV (CNX back when CNX existed and was awesome). Go on; give it a shot if you want something a bit simple to watch.

Well, that’s about it for now. Come back next week for more. Really need to do Lucky Star at some point too.

Yeah, it’s still technical Tuesday. I’ve been ill. I should really see a doctor at some point but mines such a git to see why bother. Then again I do seem to be loosing more blood that seems “normal” so might have to try again.

Oh well.

Right, anime.

Not allot this week due to ill and laziness.

Oooow: Kaibutsu Oujo

“After receiving his sister’s letter of invitation, Hiyomi Hiro goes to the house indicated on the map, but finds it abandoned. Its gate is locked and the windows are boarded up. He has no choice but to go back to town on foot. There, he finds a cart loaded with a pile of furniture.

The person pulling the cart is a strange looking little girl in a maid costume, and at the top of the furniture pile, there sits a beautiful girl with long hair in a black one-piece dress. The cart is stuck in a ditch and will not move.

Then, an iron pillar of a building under construction falls. Hiro protects the girl but is crushed under the pillar. He is sent to a hospital, but there is nothing they can do for him and he passes away.

Suddenly, the girl appears in front of his body in the mortuary. She then says these strange words to Hiro: “This is a good body.”

The girl stands and holds her index finger up over his body. Then, fireballs gather around her finger. They drop onto the white cloth covering his face, and a heat haze appears around his body…”

~Fansub TV~

Another odd one, I like odd. Only seen one ep so far and really it’s … interesting. I think the 1st ep of any series need to grab you a little and this dose it with it’s giant wolf men, robot girls, vampires and multiples deaths of one guy.

Really, I can’t say much having only seen one ep of the series so far but I think I’m going to like it. Has some good action, it’s not ANOTHER ecchi comedy harem thing and it’s got some good action (something I’ve been lacking since “Black Lagoon”). More news and a better review when I see more, then I can tell you if it’s crap or not.

Good!: Planetes

“The story of Planetes follows the crew of the DS-12 “Toy Box” of the Space Debris Section, a unit of Technora Corporation. Debris Section’s purpose is to prevent the damage or destruction of satellites, space stations and spacecraft from collision with debris in Earth’s and the Moon’s orbits. They use a number of methods to dispose of the debris (mainly by burning it via atmospheric re-entry or through salvage), accomplished through the use of EVA suits.

The episodes sometimes revolve around debris collection itself, but more often the concept of collecting “trash” in space is merely a storytelling method for building character development. The members of the Debris Section are looked down upon as the lowest members of the company and they must work hard to prove their worth to others and accomplish their dreams.”

~Wiki~

I saw this show many moons ago … I bloody LOVED it. Really, it’s a damn good bit of anime that no single human should be without. The basics of the show are “bin men, in space” which sounds crap and you fully expect everyone to fly around in space suits being super cool. It isn’t. It makes the whole idea of space more believable. Not everyone is a chisel jawed space man, their all just people and act so. Rather that full cool figure hugging space suit they wear big baggy suits that only the gloves and helmets they own as the suits are expensive. It’s as how you expect space to be in 20-50years, mundane.

It’s just a really well done bit of work. It also looks bloody lovely. The director (Goro Taniguchi) wanted to bankrupt the animation company with this show and it really shows. It also has a brilliant story, it goes from a nice little ride then drops into the depths of despair as Hachimaki (another main character) slowly slips away from the crew and everyone else as his ambitions slowly destroy him.

Really, just go find it, sit down and watch. It’s awesome.

WTF? Non-anime: The Venture Bros

The Venture Bros. is an American animated television series airing as part of Adult Swim on Cartoon Network. It chronicles the adventures of two dopey teenage boys, Hank and Dean Venture; their super-scientist father, Dr. Thaddeus “Rusty” Venture; and the family bodyguard, secret agent Brock Samson

~Wiki~

Right, non anime recommendation, why? Because it’s my blog and I really like this show. Remember all those crappy shows you used to watch in the morning (Scooby Doo, Johnny Quest and the like)? Well Venture Bro’s is a parody of 90% and it doses it well. It has silly over the top villains who have their own league. Stupid inventions and the two main characters (Dean    & Hank) really don’t feature too much but you don’t really care as their both idiots (like proper kids in Saturday morning cartoons). Really, again just go find an episode. You’ll giggle like an idiot or just find the sort of violence Brock Samson can do is shocking.

Right, that’s all for this week. Come back next week when I might really make a proper post of some sort.

Evening Folks,

Yes, yes. This post is a day late and rather short but, sods you. There’s not allot out at the moment, as Mr Ben “Yahtzee” Croshaw puts it “season known as bugger alls coming out”. So a look at what’s out recently and anything else I feel like.

Good: Mnemosyne

“The “hard-boiled science fiction action” story follows a Tokyo woman named Rin, an assassin named Laura that is hunting her down, and the series of bizarre incidents involving angel-like creatures. Visual novel game illustrator Ch?? Higashiguchi (Phantom of Inferno) created the original character designs, and Hiroshi Ohnogi (Gundam, Macross, Noein) is writing the scripts.”

~FansubTV~

Sex and violence all in one anime … sort of. The series is only on ep2 (45mins per ep) but the basics of it seem to be the same. Young-ish girl investigates stuff, crap hits fan, violence, ending. For the life of me I see nothing bad with that. The series does have the old odd anime thing about it in that Rin As?gi is cannot be killed. She can be screwed over fairly badly but has a sort of Wolverine healing thing going so even when she has around 1000 lumps of metal put into her (by one creepy evil doctor. We’re not talking bullets here but piercings) she takes a while and heals up. Now, this isn’t a super fast heal (pull out metal, hole heals) but more painful and laboured. It’s really good bit of action with nice dark looks (bit like a darker “Darker than Black”).

Animation is lovely throughout (being an OVA) and everything flows nicely but being only a few eps long not allot has been said about anyone so allot of key points are off in the murk somewhere. You can just watch for the violence and nudity but its also good a good story to it and (in ep1) zombies. Come on, it’s even got a shotgun glove thing. So, give that a look.

WTF; Kyouran Kazoku Nikki

“Thousand years before, Enka, the destroying god, dies with the word that its ‘child’ will destroy the world. A Thousands years later, some people (and non-human creatures) who have potential of being the children of Enka are found. They participate to the ‘Peaceful Family Project’, in order to find out who the real child of Enka is, and also to teach him or her about the love of family and stop it from destroying the world.”

~Fansub TV~

Right, errm … this is the WTF anime for the week as I have NO clue what the hells happening in it. In the 1step there’s a loin, squid, robot (looks like it’s been ripped from Cyber City Oedo 808), a freaky cat girl. All living together and I really don’t have a clue.

HOWEVER, this series so far has been a bit of a giggle. It’s a guilty pleasure you wouldn’t tell your anime mates about. It’s silly, colourful and loud with little to no restraint and very much insane. Imagine if you had to take a load of super being and make a family. That’s about it. Okay. There’s a few normal people thrown in but still it’s mad.

Well, thats about it. Yeah, it’s short. Sue me.

Recommended Anime - Vol #1

Big_Adam

Posted in Anime on May 26, 2008 at 12:38 am

I did an animé run-down but this time I’m going to properly recommend some animé. Like a “must see” sorta list.

Now, some of this is the English but I’m going with allot isn’t licensed yet in the America’s so some you’re going to have to find yourself.

Anywho, lets rock.

Cowboy Bebop - MUST BE SEEN IN ENGLISH - A simple story about a few bounty hunter who chase anyone with a price on their head. Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine, and Ed(ward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV). Simple, oh and their in space and the earth is screwed so people mostly live on Mars.

I LOVE Cowboy Bebop and still do, it’s just a pure classic. Awesome soundtrack mixing blue and a little metal on occasion. With vivid backdrops and awesome character. It’s a very well grounded series. Where as most animes with space go full on lazers and giant robots, Cowboy Bebop doesn’t. It’s space a few years forward, so space ships aren’t these amazing things their junk that need a good boot to keep running on occasion.

You learn to love all the people in the show and their problems, like Faye’s gambling problems and weird past. It’s just a really good series. It still stand up well now when put against other series that get churned out now.

Pick up a copy, you won’t be disappointed. It has comedy, action, drama and it’s just a good laugh.

Neon Genesis Evangelion - Watch in English or Japanese. Rather go Jp myself - A might tall standing series in the world of anime. It’s a series that has a massive fan base and one of the few that is going to become a WESTERN live action film (which will suck).

The story again set in the future follows Shinji Ikari a slightly wimpy….well very wimpy kid who’s had a bit of a crappy life. Dad’s left him, mother has died, then he gets a call from his father and the story goes from there. So far you’re thinking “crappy” but I didn’t mention the giant ass kicking robot.

On the surface for the a large section of the series you can just go “ooow, robots” as for robot fight their rather bloody and violent but very fluid. The giant robots are called “Eva’s” which fight “angels” which are big things that just sorta blow crap up.

But NGE goes alot, LOT deeper with many religious undertones and lots of psychology as well from the point of Shinji and the other children namely Asuka Langley Soryu and Rei Ayanami. The relationships between these three makes a massive part of the series as they grow then it starts to go a bit wrong.

One note with this series, last say ten or so eps suck. This isn’t a writing thing it that the team making it (Gainax) sorta ran out of cash. So watch all the eps THEN the movies. The movies sort ALLOT of things out.

Ghibli - ANYTHING made by Ghibli - Ghibli are a studio, they are in fact a really good studio. The closest thing you could call them is the Japanese Pixar. They make beautiful films which alot of soul to them. They move you and draw you in. Top I’d say have a look at The Castle of Cagliostro, Princess Mononoke and Howl’s Moving Castle. All classic, all brilliant.

FLCL - Watch in English and I WILL stab you - If you want you’re mind truly f**ked then you can do no better than the brilliant madness of FLCL. The story follows Naota, a young lad in a small town where nothing much happens. Untill a woman on a moped runs him down and beats him round the head with a guitar.

Then a robot comes out of his head fighting ANOTHER robot.

Then it gets weird.

Only six eps long but it’s just right. You’ll need to watch it a few times to understand any of it but you will enjoy it. If you’re not giggling with glee when a robot poops out a person then the mystery of the giant eyebrows on Commander Amarao will have you perplexed.

It’s funny, it’s quick, it’s violent. It’s FLCL.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - A sugar sweet cute series, it starts nice with people saying ~desu alot and it’s all lovely. Then people start beating their friends to death with a baseball bat then clawing out their own throats.

Lovely.

A very dark series really. It all seems nice but soon descends down in the to depths of madness. It’s a hard series to watch as it jumps around a bit but. JJW009 just watched the lot and loves it.

Well, that’s about it for now. Tune in next time for more animé.

Or not.

Ah bugger you. I’m going to have some jam on toast.

In Anime This Week : Vol 2

Big_Adam

Posted in Anime on May 20, 2008 at 11:15 pm

Evening anime fans. Decided to try and do these on Tuesday afternoons. As later in the week I wouldn’t do them and Wednesday is my long day.

Anyway, on with the animé!

Good: Kure-nai / Kurenai

“Based on a series of light novels, Kure-nai is about the adventures and misadventures of 16-year-old Shintaro Kurenai. Shintaro is an authority in settling disputes between people, and is one day approached by Murasaki Kuhouin, the daughter of a powerful plutocratic family, asking him to be her bodyguard.”

~FansubTV~

You can see the basics of the series. It’s a bit of an oddball coupling. In this series Shintaro is a “dispute mediator” but a more hands on violent type under the guide of Benika J?zawa. One day Benika gives Shintaro the job of bodyguard to Murasaki

Kuhouin, a small girl who for most of her life has been kept away from the world. First few eps explain it well but there’s also the odd inclusion of Shintaro power, a horn that comes out of his arm for extra power.

Bar one or two things I rather like this series so far. The story is nice and the characters all interact nicely. As the series is only up to ep7 not allot has happened yet and allot of things are still a bit unclear, but that add to the series a bit.

The thing I don’t like about this series so far is Shintaro arm horn thing. It’s a real curve ball of a thing to throw in. Before the series seemed fairly rested in reality, a bit like a Mezzo DSA series but more today and less funny, the arm horn just screwed that right over.

Another problem is that some of the animation goes a bit robotic at times, as the animators seem to be attempting to animate everything. Clothing, hair all moving and swaying seems to be taking it toll on the animators so sometimes it goes a bit robotic.

Still, so far it seems good. The action is good and the story is plodding along nicely. All the characters seem happy and it’s settling to a nice light atmosphere before poop hits the fan.

Good: Minami-ke

Based on the manga of the same title, the story revolves around three sisters, Haruka, Natsu, and Chiaki. As they don’t have parents, the eldest sister, Haruka, does most of the housekeeping chores although she goes to high school. The second sister, Kana, is a junior high school student. She is a cheerful girl but a bit of an airhead. Chiaki still attends elementary school, but she is a cool and ironic person, and often makes a fool of Kana. Most of the stories are scenes of their daily lives, and they progress normally without remarkable climaxes.

~FansubTV~

Now, this series is now up to Minami-ke Okawari, which is a follow on. So I’m going to talk about Minami-ke. This is another series I rather enjoy although, oddly not watched allot of. It’s been an on and off one for me.

The series follows three sisters living in an apartment and going about their daily lives in very very odd ways at time. Not odd as in giant robot but odd as in hanging each other up as weather charms. It’s a lovely little series. The animation is nice and bright and the story is a giggle with cross-dressing and all sorts of weird stuff happening. It’s sort of like Azumanga (but with overall silly turned down a bit) if they did a family version and tweaked it a bit, that vain of comedy.

Again, it’s another good little series and a nice one that you don’t have to watch EVERY single episode to know what the hell going on (like Bleach or Trigun). A nice pick up and watch series when you have time. I like it!

Meh: D.Gray-Man.

“Allen Walker is a young Exorcist who has a cursed eye that can see the suffering of the Akumas created by The Millenium Earl. He travels to England to the Headquarters of the Exorcists where his Master has sent him to meet with the other Exorcists. The battle with the Millenium Earl and the Noah Family vs. the Exorcists intensifies when some of the best Exorcists begin to get killed by hoards of Akuma. Japan takes centre stage in this end of 19th Century plot in order to not let the entire human race be turned into Akumas and the Exorcists have the power of “Innocence”, that was given to them by God, on their side.”

~FansubTV~

Been out a while but worth a look. The series follows Allen Walk as stated an exorcist. It’s a touch steam punk Victorian era setting so there’s a nice bit of warmth to the look of the entire thing. Animation is nice and fast with some nicely twisted looking evil chaps for Allen to fight.

The problem I had with this series is I really couldn’t be arsed with it. It seemed too much a mix of other things that had been done before. The weapons all seemed a bit ripped from s-CRY-ed, the look from Last Exile. Not to say it was a bad series, I mean parts of it look damn amazing to watch but it didn’t catch me too well. Give it a try but it’s up to ep80 so you’ll have some work to catch up.

Bad: Nothing in the bad catagory this week. Been busy attempting to do work but watching Kurenai instead.

So, here’s a video of a cat girl singing a song that’s really rather catchy.

See ya round the inter-tubes.

In Anime This Week : Vol 1

Big_Adam

Posted in Anime on May 15, 2008 at 11:07 am

Right,

Going to attempt on of these a week. A little view into whats out in the world of anime. It’s not going to be as good as a proper anime news site (like Anime News Network) but … meh.

Good : Code Geass R2

The second season of Code Geass following Lelouch Lamperouge (aka Zero) as he attempt to overthrow the Britannia Empire. The basics of season one was that Lelouch gained a Geass from C.C. (A green haired pizza loving girl). A Geass gave Lelouch the power to give anyone one command one that they MUST follow. The Britannia empire in all of this is … well … us. The Britannia Empire has taken over the world using mechs called Knightmares, and uses them in the series to overthrow Japan as well which is renamed it Area 11. Lelouch none too happy about this and decided to sort it out as well as go after the Britannia Empire for more personal reason. Won’t say more as it’s going to ruin it.

Skip forward to R2 and now Lelouch has his army of the Black Knights along with his trump card Kallen and now Rolo. Kallen being the pilot of the brutal Guren with a radiation wave right arm. Rolo, well …. He’s a little moany git with his own Geass.

Sorry for lack of details but the series is still unfolding and it would ruin season 1 if you where to know them.

The series (I think) is still damn good. Some people across the web seem to say it’s taking some odd turns but no more than Death Note did after a while. The animation is still top. Fan service is … enough. Not excessive. I highly suggest giving the first series and the second a go. It’s got some complex and twisted parts to it, but it’s still damn good.

The few problems with the series are really Lelouch. He’s on a level of smartness the same as L from Death Note but he gets a bit too big and pompous at time being such a smart arse. So at time you will want him to fail just to shut him the hell up. He will irritate the hell out of you at times. Another examples is one named Lloyd Asplund who is also a fairly irritating man but he gets his creations blown out of the sky so it works out.

Still, give the series a go. It’s good, animation is lovely and it’s got robots in it. For all it’s faults it’s still a good watch.

Bad : Kamen no Maid Guy

Urgh, another week another ecchi comedy series with maids in it, do these people not know of Mahoromatic? The “twist” in this series is instead of a young guy with a maid (like Mahoromatic, Hand Maid May) the maid is a guy (massive monster of a man at that) and the young guy is replaced by a well endowed girl. Thus leading to hilarious incidence … yeah right.

People on the net seem to be enjoying this (it’s top rated on Fan-Sub TV) but I just can’t get into it. There are far better comedies out there, better fan service, just … better. So why bother?

If you want a good funny series go look for Azumanga Daioh. You want action go for Black Lagoon (alt link)(mix of comedy and action with that) you want fan service then go watch Green Green TV. I suppose if you want an all in one anime then give Kamen no Maid Guy a go. I didn’t get into it but hey that me.

NGE ; You Are (Not) Alone.

Big_Adam

Posted in Anime on May 13, 2008 at 12:48 pm

It seems the people over at Gainax have been busy this year and have bought out a new Neon Genesis Evangelion film.

/!\ Spoilers for the NGE Series! If you plan on watching the series DO NOT READ! /!\

Those of you unfamiliar with the NGE series, the basics of it follow Shinji a 14 year old kid who after three ears gets a call from his father to pilot a giant robot (or Eva as it’s known). The world in which this takes place has been ravaged by the “Second Impact” which wiped out 50% of the earth’s population. To stop the “Third Impact” (meaning no more people), NERV is constructed along with the Eva’s (big robots) to fight angels (bigger, meaner robot things) and stop the “third impact”.

Really, it’s a damn complex story. Big robots fight other big things, lots of subtext and little moments to watch out for. It is a really well done bit of work.

Problem with the old NGE series was that by the end the company ran out of money. So the last few eps used still frames, black and white, anything to cut costs and come to some sort of end. When the series did end the company was sent numerous death threats due to the lack of an ending. So with the money made from the series they made two extra films; one a recap of the series and then a proper big ending to the series.

Now they are back with Evangelion series of films. First of which is Evangelion: 1.0 You Are (Not) Alone. The film recaps the series first few eps and first few angels as they attack Tokyo III.

Story - Well, as far as I can tell it’s pretty much a condensed version of the first few eps and angels (angels shown are Sachiel (humanoid one, 1st angel in series), Shamshel (freaky looking tentacle thing) and Ranuiel (the drill one, but much more kick arse)(List of angels here for refrence). So not much to say if you’ve seen the series itself, you’ll know the story.

Animation – Now Gainax has some money they seem to be splashing it around and the new NGE looks stunning. The angel and many other parts are CGI now but the look is really nice. Although, many parts are either remakes or are straight copy and past from the series. Parts like Unit – 01’s jump and Misato’s beer drinking all seem exactly the same as the series. They are re-mastered if they are not remade mind.

Sound – The angels now are a bit more vocal. In the series they just sort of made some noise then got blown up in a massive way. Now they make some interesting noise key of which is Ranuiel. Rather than floating about Ranuiel now screams, in a rather scary way. Whenever Ranuiel dose something (Ranuiel transforms between fire modes) it screams in a rather cool and freaky way. As well as the angel all the sound is a bit clearer and there’s more ambient noise in certain places making it just nicer.

Overall – It’s a damn good film, don’t get me wrong here but I’m not sure why Gainax are doing it. It just seems like a condensed recap of the series skipping some big and important points and changing the story a bit. For example Lilith (Pic) is shown off much sooner than being a big reveal later on in the series. I mean, it was all rather tied up in the series so why the remake?

Might just be a cash in really, 2007-8 seems to be the years of the remake. Rocky, Indiana Jones, AVP: R and the rest.

BUT! You Are (Not) Alone is rather good for the NGE fan out there. It’s a nice recap and you never know, it might turn into something new and interesting. Have to wait and see really. The DVD of You Are (Not) Alone is out in Japan after the initial cinema release so it’s going to be a while before USA import is available. Still, if you’re a NGE or just a hardcore animé fan I suggest giving it a look. Even if it’s just for Rei Ayanami.

Hellsing OVA III

Big_Adam

Posted in Anime on March 27, 2008 at 2:23 am

Ah Hellsing.

I’ve been in love with this series for many years. It was one of the first series I ever watched. It was stylish, brutal, voilent, excellent music but was always a bit lacking in story department.

The orginal Hellsing series didn’t really follow any previous story, it was a story semi-taken from the manga’s but rehashed a bit and it all ended up being a little worse off for it. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a cracking story but it does seem to just spin it wheels at some points. Starts off about Seras Victoria, a police woman who happens to end up in a town with her squad which happens to have a rather hardcore vampire priest running about. Long story short, all her squad die but her, Alucard shows up (the main vampire man), ass is kicked, Seras get shot through the lung with a small cannon, then Seras becomes a vampire because of Alucard. From there, there’s a little about mass production vampires using “freak chips” and it all ends with Incognito showing up. I’ll leave the TV series at that incase you ever want to watch it. Tis very good indeed.

Anyway, that was long ago. Now we have the Hellsing Ultimate OVA. Which is set to follow the manga more. Having read one of the mangas. Well, it’s going to be fun.

The OVA is set on some of the ideas of the Nazi attempting to make and army of vampires. Although Alucard and Walter “Angel Of Death” Dornez see to that by destroying the compound at which this plan (called Millennium) was taking place.

Fifty off years later the few remaining of the orginal Millennium plan have reformed the Third Reich, have an army of vampires and their sights set on the creature that took them down in the first place, Alucard.

I really liked this new instalment in the series, mainly because stuff happened! Allot of new faces where introduced (one or two quickly removed :D ) and it shifted the story along nicely. I now have a clue what the hell is going on.

It also keeps the Hellsing madness and insanity. A secure room with the queen and many hellsing staff suddenly has Junior Warrant Officer Schrödinger show up, in full Nazi gear who happily says “hello”. A which point (after much thinkin) Seras says it back (sounds crap, is funny).

Or the insane part with Rip Van Winkle, a mad looking woman with a “magic bullet” and a massive old rifle. After taking over an aircraft carrier she proceeds to pain a symbol on the deck in the blood of the slaughter crew then sits in the middle of it with a yellow parasol singing German opera songs. Madness!

Little run down of good and bad bits.

Good Bits -

Well it’s Hellsing so it still looks damn good.

Massive Violence.

SR-71 Blackbird doing high speed nose dive into a aircraft carrier.

Seras Victoria <3

Alexander Anderson, I love that insane chap!

Story!

Bad Bits -

Many people introduced, no names given.

F-ING Junior Warrant Officer Schrödinger, bloody annoying little git. Good pun though.

Needed to be long, I hate cliffhanger endings!

All in all, another good bit of Hellsing based work. The animation is starting to look really good as there was some problem in the first OVA, well compared to the series anyway.

All in all, damn good. I await the next one. Now, screens!

Peace

Sub Vs. Dub.

Big_Adam

There’s a golden rule in the world of anime.

A rule I’m sure many will not know but one that I have learned over the years.

And the rule is this : Never watch a series in more than one language.

Simple translation is you either go sub or dub. One or the other, no faffing about with both.  Today I broke this rule. And thus ruined a series for me.

The show is FLCL, a proper mind f**k of a series but it has a very good story once you mine down into it and have seen it a few times.  I’ve seen the series many times in Japaneses and loved every second of it. Right down to the obtuse Wolf the 3rd references is a few shows. It’s a awesome show.

Then I watched it in English. Only for 10mins or so and only one ep.  Now I have ruined the memory of that series. I fell in love with the JP dialog, it worked, it flowed and everyone sounded right. When in english everyone sound like they either had their balls crushed in a vice or they sound of the people makes you want to rip you own ears off. Although the acception to this rule is  Cowboy Bebop. The ONLY show that MUST be watched in English.

Problem with dub work is that the cheese burger inhaling yanks  try to make JP culture work but in a US way. For example Azumanga Diaho has a character called Osaka in it, from (oddily) Osaka which is a bit more slow paced place. Unless it was pointed out to you though or you where fluent in Japaneses then you probably wouldn’t notice. Some dialect is diffrent but you don’t really notice this (could be my ignorance thought).

So, how do the Americans get this point accross?  Simple, they turn her into the most southen redneck sounding girl on the planet. You fully expect her to bust out a trucker cap during the series and sit on a porch. It’s horrible.

If they sounds isn’t butchered then  things people might find “difficult” are glossed over to make them simpler or completely  changed see the “donky p**s” line from “Princess Mononoke”.

I don’t get why when a series is translated it translated so someone thinks the fans of the series have a brain in their head.  Rather than making it all simpler than a cheese roll.
