The pricing has just come out for the new 1,333MHz FSB Intel processors. And while I might have said in a previous blog that I’d give them a miss and wait for Penryn, the super-low prices have made me think again.
Let’s take the new 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo E6750. In testing this performed identically to the E6700 but could overclcok further. And it cost 40% less (at time of writing). And there’s a new speed category too, a 3GHz E6850 that only costs around £170. Oh sod it, yeah, gimme one of those!
So what’s that title all about then? Well, with Intel being so aggresive, and AMD floundering to match it for either price or performance (and still make money) Intel might be so aggresive at the moment that AMD won’t last too long. And that’s bad news for us, the consumer. With no competition, innovation will stall and Intel can set its own pricing. So, in the short term the super-aggresiveness is great for us - we get loads of fantastic products at very low prices - but in the long term it might be disasterous.
They should just make them free! Intel has loads of cash :p
INTEL head office
Intel boss says too the board “lets slow down to help AMD catch up”….. Intel boss gets shot by the board
OR
Intel boss says “build em fast and sell them cheap. we will kill off amd and rule the world. our profits will go from 128billion to 256billion”…..The intel boss get a new car, pay rise and dancin girls.
Moral of the story….intel are a business and only care about making money. If they can they will kill off the upstarts that are AMD without losing any sleep. Infact they will probably keep pressing snooze and have a lay in.
