CPC Benchmarks - nearly there!

Clive Webster

Well, the benchmarks are almost done. In fact the reference PC is running the tests as I write, and then it’ll just be a case of Spode putting these scores into the code, making a couple of interface tweaks and we’ll have something we can send out.

It’s been a tough week or two bug-testing the new benchmarks into the wee small hours, and debating what’s going on with the few anomalous scores we’ve been getting, but it’s definitely worth the effort. These new benchmarks are hardcore and really stress the components of a PC. One motherboard we’re reviewing for issue 49 (the first offical outing of the new benchmark suite) couldn’t handle them at all and froze in the I/O- and HDD-intensive GIMP image-editing test. That’ll be a fun review to write!

Also look out for a new game benchmark in issue 49 that’ll give a better indication of how much difference overclocking your CPU makes when gaming. In all, we’ve raised the bar even higher when it comes to thorough testing, so products will have to be even better to get a thumbs-up from us. And I can’t wait to see the new leaderboard - who’s got the fastest rig out there, and who’ll realise that their system really isn’t fully stable at 4GHz? Watch this space (well, the News page anyway) for the public distribution of the new benchies.

You’ve been working to the wee hours?? You think testing it’s hard - try coding it AND testing it! :P :P

Should I continue to waste time looking for the new bechmarks or have you not uploaded them yet ?

We’re testing the LeaderBoard upload mechanism and the LeaderBoard itself still.

We’ll let you know when it’s all done with a news story so you won’t miss it.
