EA Losing Ground in the DRM fight

EA have had a LOT of bad publicity recently. They’ve been slated accross the web and as a result, they’ve been forced to gradually relax their DRM policies due to overwhelming customer complaints (They are now allowing you to de-authorise machines, so you should have no worries if you remember to do this before you do any re-installs or upgrades). It’s definately a step in the right direction, however, none of this changes the fact that SecuROM is installed on your computer, without permission, and could potentially interfere with the normal operation of your computer.

There’s also the case of the blatant lies printed in the manual about being able to have multiple spore profiles on one installation. This turned out not to be the case, and if several people (ie a family) played on a shared computer, each individual person would requier their own copy. Originally, EA apologised saying it was a mis-print, but, due to customer complaints, have had to allow mulitple profiles (up to 5) per copy of spore.

It doesn’t end there though! They keep on treating customers like crap and bringing more bad publicity upon themselves! They’ve actually threatened to disable the accounts of anyone who complains about DRM on the spore forums. This, in the words of the moderators in some cases would mean you would need to buy a new copy to play Spore”

Thats right folks! Make too much of a noise about it and EA will try and get more money out of you. Forgive my languange but that’s f**king ridiculous.

Fortuantly, the moderators at the spore forums have AGAIN done a U-Turn on this and said people won’t be banned, just so long as they’re civil about it.

As a final blow to EA, they have recently had a class action lawsuit filed against them for the undisclosed inclusion of SecuROM with Spore. You can read all about it here . The outcome of this case will certainly be interesting, and I really hope EA lose, but whatever the outcome, at the moment, it’s just more bad publicity that EA could do without.

Thanks again to the folks at Reclaimyourgame.com for providing a great source of info on the subject!

Well i think this goes along way to highlight how crap some companys think they can treat the consumer.

Bittorent a copy after buying it and never open the original that way you should get some good trade in value on ebay or down at your local game station.
