My Nintendo DS Lite Mod: “ToonLite”

Well my Nintendo DS Lite hinge broke, mainly due to the use it had got, so I figured I wasn’t paying £50 or so to replace it (that being the average cost) so I would get the bits I needed and do it myself.

Pics of the damage:
The minor crack:

The main offender: (makes a realy nasty sound closing initially)

So off to www.dealextreme.com I went, ordered a replacement shell ($20ish) and the tri wing screwdriver set (the unit was well out of warranty already anyway but this will void your warranty)

Seeing as the old casing was white, the new one was black I decided to go for a mix & match, almost like the NUFC football strip (Brown ale optional)

So I popped the case open

Replacing the first time failed, I snapped the ribbon connecting the top screen to the mainboard, so www.dealextreme.com again to buy a replacement one.

This meant I had to solder on the speakers, quick 3 minute job, piece of cake really.

Then the 2nd attempt pretty much worked, however from the pics you can see I snapped the little plastic bit connected to the power switch, no biggy, £4 off ebay to replace it, little bit more soldering aswell though.

iPhone: My thoughts

I can’t help but feel there is only 2 kinds of people that would be buying this phone:

  • The gadget freaks that have to own every gadget as soon as they can
  • Those with more money than sense

The phone seems to try to appear to be a jack of all trades, however I cannot help but feel that it is trying to be too much and fails in some areas:

The full cover screen: I have enough problems with my screen on my phone getting scratched in my pocket, let alone a full screen on the phone

The wireless abilities: Seems like it is trying to be useful for time wasting, a YouTube browser seems a tad sad to include. WAP/GPRS I can understand (even I use it on my K800i  as a much cheaper alternative to directory enquiries)

The touch screen: I can’t stand getting smudges on my DS Lite, and that is a little screen, and make it a full size one! *panics about smudges*

The price: One word: OUCH!

Update: No idea where those A’s are coming from

Anyway, I bought one, unlocked it, used it for a bit and sold it for a tidy profit, why? Because I wanted to see what the hyp was about. Yes, it was nice, but not worth the huge contract price in my opinion

New SFF PC

Posted in Reader on at 5:50 pm

Well as I have started working again (4 weeks & paychecks in, not one for the right amount lol) I have decided to work on a SFF PC which will record tv and be a good playback for my uni place

Specs:

Opteron 144

1GBÂ DDRÂ Ram

200gb IDE Seagate HDD (all 3 of those were free,  swapped for a P5B Deluxe wi-fi/ap)

Asus A8V-Something motherboard

2 TV cards (one analogue, one digital/analogue) (free as I have the stuff already)

XFX 8400gs (useful for a HTPC as it has HDCP and component out etc)

Hand built case (to do, need a donor case and a donor PSU for it)

Case is planned to be based around a PS3/360 elite in appearance, with a card reader and side loading dvd-rw drive

Running OpenSUSE I plan to use Myth and have a nice wireless keyboard/joystick/mouse combo

Work is scheduled to start as soon as I get the rest of the stuff  (well pick up a donor case and some fibreglass stuff to hand make the case (except the mobo tray/mounts/’top’ of the case (going to mod that with some plexi)
