Lara Croft - then and now

With the release of Lara Croft: Anniversary, which is essentially the original Tomb Raider game from 1996 re-done using the excellent engine from Tomb Raider: Legend, I was inspired to revisit the classic game to see how far Lara’s adventures have come.

The most obvious difference is the graphics (obviously, since ‘Shader Models’ were but a twinkle in Nvidia’s eye back then), but it’s still striking just how much has changed. In fact, it’s not so much the fancy shader effects but the noticeable ‘pointyness’ of Lara in 1996 that really stands out (if you’ll excuse the pun) the most. As you can see from this picture, Lara in 1996 was obviously inspired by Madona’s famous conical bra from her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour. The 1996 Lara also has what can only be described as ‘a face like a slapped arse’.

The reason why the graphics look better now is disk space. The ps1 disk’s can only hold 750 mega bytes, Ps2 hold’s 4.5 gigs of space, the more space= the more polygons= more better graphics. If a PS1 game was only 10 minutes long the game would look as good as PS2, now the PS3’s Blu-Ray disk’s hold a little more than 50 gigs which is like 5 billion polygons per second, 70 HIGH DEF frames per second, with the PS3’s cell it is capable of loading 1 gig a minute, PS2 can load 120 mb’s per minute PS1 10mb p.m. It is all about the processor, and the disk space.!!!
