Upgradeable laptop draws closer

Asus C90

There’s been quite a lot of interest on the web surrounding the Asus C90 laptop, which will be the real first ‘DIY’ laptop, in that a large majority of the components will be user upgradeable. It was recently shown off at the Computex show in Taipei (which Alex, Clive and I attended a few weeks ago), but now Asus is hinting that sample may arrive in the UK fairly soon, along with a variety of MXM graphics card modules.

For those who are not familiar with the C90, Asus describes it as, ‘a fully customisable laptop/a semi “bare-bone” for which you have to choose exactly what goes inside.’ According to Asus, the bottom panel of the C90 can be removed to reveal ‘over 80% of the motherboard’ and as it uses desktop CPUs, processor upgrades will be relatively simple. The C90 can also be overclocked, and the model that was on show at Computex was running about 20% above its stock speed ‘with absolutely no reliability problems.’

Probably the most important aspect of an enthusiast-focussed, gaming laptop is the ability to upgrade the graphics, which means that the availability of a wide range of MXM graphics modules will be key to the C90’s success. Asus agrees that this is a sticking point and admitted that ‘[the MXM module] has not quite become a mainstream way of upgrading your notebook’. However, Asus also said that Nvidia is planning to make the technology more accessible and widely available in the future, which will only be a good thing for gaming notebooks in general.

The C90 certainly looks good on paper and it could be the first laptop that is genuinely attractive to enthusiasts. But, even if it does all go to plan, would you buy one instead of building a desktop PC? For me, desktops are still the way to go for gaming, but I’ll reserve final judgement until I see the C90 in the flesh.

Asus haven’t mentioned price to us yet, but I’d expect it to be £1,000-£1,500, depending on CPU/GPU spec.

I tested this camera for a client. I didn’t have the light running for more than 15 minutes. The battery lasted approximately 6 hours before recharging. The LCD, however, had a few dead pixels - never saw this before. Tried returning for exchange and had to put up quite a fight. Anyone else seen this? http://www.batterylaptoppower.com

Dear All,
Can Custompc not find a reasonably priced laptop circa £1,200, that plays games at a good frame rate 25+fps with a fast disk drive 7,200rpm and a decent screen to recommend, obviously Rock Extreme is too expensive, Alienware and Dell out of the picture. Do the other big manufactures HP and Sony (I am excluding Apple “Pro”) not have anything to offer that can go in your ‘elite’ list.

With thanks,

recommendations and reasons why, welcome.
