The release of Tomb Raider: Anniversary, which is basically just a remake of the first Tomb Raider from 1996, has sparked an interesting debate on the issue of whether game developers should remake old games or concentrate on new ideas. There’s a good article on Gamesindustry.biz called History Repeating that discuss the issue, and I recommend giving it a read.
Personally, I like the idea because there are many excellent games from yesteryear that we simply can’t play (or play easily) anymore because hardware and operating systems have changed so much. There are many games that I’d love to see brought up-to-date and take advantage of modern technology, such as Carrier Command, Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe, TIE Fighter and Moonstone to name but a few. So long as the remake is true to the original then it won’t offend anyone, and games such as Tomb Raider: Anniversary and Sid Meier’s Pirates! have proved this.
I see the argument that games developers should be looking forward and not back, but I don’t see why it has to be one or the other; surely there can be a blend of remakes and new ideas, so long as the remakes are not simply poorly conceived cash-ins on the reputation of a classic title, in the same way as many movie remakes.
I mentioned a few old games that I’d like to see remade earlier in this post, but what games would you like to see given a modern makeover (if any)? Post your comments and let me know!
A remake of the first two Monkey Island games with modern graphics would be nice. No changes to the format or puzzles mind, just the updated graphics.
I think it’s a genuinely good idea… my friend for one refuses to play any game that doesn’t have any modern graphics and looks rubbish even if they are trully great games such as Deus Ex or Half Life.
I have Tie Fighter on CD and am pretty annoyed that I haven’t played it for years since my control pad never had any drivers for Windows 2000 Pro (yes, i cba to buy another one) and now I’m not even sure if it will run with Vista.
Like I said earlier, Half Life is a game they should update - and not just stick a “Source” tag on the end of it without doing anything major ( i know it’s not *that* old but it’s old to me lol) and I can’t wait for Black Mesa (the proper Half Life update mod).
My favourite ever, platform game was a little known number that went by the name of “Cheeky Boys”, on the Sega Mega Drive.
Now althought there are probably - I wouldn’t know of course - loads of websites with that title, it was brilliant. I’d like to see it on 360 Arcade or playable on some sort of emulator, with savepoints…it wasn’t easy.
Another is “Bob” - sheer brilliance - a little yellow robot - class.
There are a few games that I would like to see remade. I think a remake of Powermonger would be excellent and maybe even Utopia. Have you seen any of the screens for the new Speedball 2? I have my concerns…it all looks a bit like style over substance.
Another game I would love to see a remake of would be ‘Rebelstar’…if anyone can remember it…
