Teh best game ever?

I’ve played many, many games over the years, but relatively few have really hooked me to the point where I can’t play anything else, and find it difficult to stop playing and go to bed.

Counter-Strike, X-COM: UFO Defence and the first two Monkey Island games (to name a few) all managed to make this illustrious list, to which I have now also added Medieval II: Total War.

I resisted playing Medieval II: Total War when it was first released because, although I’d enjoyed the original Medieval games, they’d didn’t really ‘hook’ me. Generally speaking, I’m more of a fan of first-person shooters than I am of RTS games, so there was always something more interesting to distract me from playing it. However, about a month ago, starved of a decent FPS to play (S.T.A.L.K.E.R. never hooked me either) I decided to give it a go and, bar Counter-Strike readers’ nights, I haven’t played anything else since.

I really can’t explain what it is about Medieval II that’s so addictive. Possibly it’s the combination of real-time strategy and turn-based action (I’ve always loved turn-based games, dating right back to VGA Planets), but this combo was also a part of Medieval 1, and I managed to resist this game.

Gamers can be quite fickle, however, and I’m no exception, so perhaps some other game (ET: Quake Wars, perhaps?) will steal its thunder in the future, but right now, for me at least, Medieval II is teh best game ever.

I’d add Age of Empires II to the list. I’m still addicted, to it and Rollercoaster Tycoon.

I couldn’t get the hang of Rollercoaster Tycoon; I always made the drinks too sugary or the food to salty and people just barfed everywhere. Best to stick to magazines and websites I think!

the original Shogan Total war is still the best of the series and got me totally hooked to the whole set. There is nothing like watching your ninja sneak into your enemiy’s uchi and administrer a trickle of liquid death a la Dr No. QUALITY!

It’s funny you should write this. I’ve just re-started playing M2TW after an absence of 4-5 months… To me the mark of a great game (as opposed to an addictive one) is that you can go back to it and love it like it’s new all over again!

It’s good to be sure, but M2:TW has too many annoying bugs that weren’t fixed with the 1.2 patch.

Never mind that is you want the 1.3 patch to include unit balancing etc you have to buy the Kingdoms expansion pack.

Poor show all round from CA. Since I won my copy of M2:TW in a competition I haven’t lost out, but Kingdoms will have to be really special for me to buy it.
