Custom PC Awards 2007

Subscribers to Custom PC will have received issue 50 of the magazine by now and so will know that, in addition to the Dream PCs Labs test, there’s also a breakdown of the winners of the Custom PC Awards 2007.

This year’s awards are different to those of previous years, in that the majority of the awards (11 of the 14) were decided by your votes in our Reader Satisfaction Survey, rather than by the Custom PC team debating the relative merits of the products we’ve reviewed. Some of you will probably remember filling in that survey a month or so ago (nearly 4,000 of you did, so thanks for that!).

In the survey we asked you to rate the manufacturers of all the products you bought in the last 18 months in a variety of areas, including the performance and overclockability of their products, value for money and even the quality of the manufacturers’ websites. Ratings of ‘Excellent’ scored 10 points, ranging to 0 points for ratings of ‘Very Poor’. As such, the results of the survey provide a valuable insight (for us, other readers and the industry in general) into what you, the Custom PC community, think of certain brands, and who you consider to be the best makers of PC kit.

This is important because, while it’s all well and good if the CPC team says that BFG (for example) is great, if this doesn’t reflect what you think then what’s the point in us giving BFG a shiny award? (As it turns out, you do rate BFG very highly and so they did get a shiny award!). I’ve always thought that all the best awards ceremonies are those where the awards are decided by readers/consumers/people in general, rather than by the hacks who get to play with stuff for free.

The roll of honour for the Custom PC Awards 2007 makes for interesting reading. It includes some familiar names, such as Asus and Corsair, but it also contains some names that may not be quite so familiar to you, such as PlusNet for Best ISP, or that may come as something of a surprise, such as Dell for Best Monitor Manufacturer.

You can see the full list of winners and nominees in Issue 50 so take a look and let me know what you think. Also let me know whether you think that awards ceremonies such as ours are valuable too. I’ve explained why we’ve run the awards differently this year and why I think they are valuable, but you may see them as pointless, self-congratulatory affairs that serve little purpose. If you do then let me know why.

While you’re thinking about that, I’ll leave you with a shot of me in action giving the awards presentation at the winners’ do in London. I’ll spare you the photos of an inebriated Custom PC team from later on in the night (unless I get some requests to see them, of course)…
