With the release of Lara Croft: Anniversary, which is essentially the original Tomb Raider game from 1996 re-done using the excellent engine from Tomb Raider: Legend, I was inspired to revisit the classic game to see how far Lara’s adventures have come.
The most obvious difference is the graphics (obviously, since ‘Shader Models’ were but a twinkle in Nvidia’s eye back then), but it’s still striking just how much has changed. In fact, it’s not so much the fancy shader effects but the noticeable ‘pointyness’ of Lara in 1996 that really stands out (if you’ll excuse the pun) the most. As you can see from this picture, Lara in 1996 was obviously inspired by Madona’s famous conical bra from her 1990 Blonde Ambition tour. The 1996 Lara also has what can only be described as ‘a face like a slapped arse’.
The Custom PC Benchmarks 2007 are nearing completion and the bug-testing phase is about ready to start. Hopefully, we’ll be able to start using them in anger in Issue 49 (the October issue, out 23 August) and they should be available for you to download by then too. Read more
