We get up close and personal with Nvidia's 1.4 billion transistor super chip
Nvidia's new high-end graphics card, the GeForce GTX 280 has been a long time in the making. Although Nvidia has launched other high-end graphics cards since the 8800 GTX first set out to wow us in 2006, these have either been dual GPU offerings such as the 9800 GX2, or underwhelming efforts like the GeForce 9800 GTX. The GTX 280 is a true high-end graphics card in the traditional mould - one, massive, expensive, hot running GPU. It features a massive bank of 240 stream processors, a 512-bit memory interface and packs 1GB of GDDR3 memory. If you want the full skinny on the card, as well as its performance in games, then make sure you check out our full review of the GeForce GTX 280, but if you just want to take a closer look at this supercar of the PC world, you've come to the right place.
See the video below:
Its only the same size as the 8800 Ultra and 9800GX2. Its an amazing card yes but its worth holding out with a 9 Series until they get this new Technology that they are using until its next series. Yes it has 240 processes, but its shader is lacking compared to the 9800GX2 by over 20million. like with all new things though. it takes the 2nd time around to get it down properly. This is the future of gaming, but the 1st of its kind so it will lack a bit.
Something will have to change one day. Gpu's can't just keep getting bigger and bigger. Maybe real time ray tracing will finish off the gpu as we know it.
gotta commend these companies on their designs. the GPU itself was almost wafer thin yet they insist on adding 5 kilos of inefficient heatsinks! get your priorities right nVidia!! you've supplied the power, now supply a reasonable cooler!!
Its odd that they have returned to the disjointed cooler - much like the 8800 GTS 512. I thought the efforts they made with the 9800GTX produced a much more elegant design.
Blimey. At this rate you'll need a second case just to hold the GPU. I wonder how much bigger they are going to get before something dramatically changes.
you'll have to take a look at my special then :P
look at how big it is... i dont think i've ever seen anything quite so big... *jaw drops*
