Number 07 - Final Doom

Welcome to Hell. It's busier than a beach in Mallorca in August, and the residents aren't friendly atall

iD Software, 1996

An FPS where you almost never have to aim sounds like an odd choice for a top ten of tough games, but Final Doom manages, despite its comparatively primitive gun pointing system, to be an absolute pig of a game to finish.

Final Doom exists to prove to those who thought they had mastered the Doom series that they needed to do much, much better.Bigger levels populated by obscene numbers of monsters are the order of the day, as is a low amount of ammo.

The skills required are limited – two dimensional dodging and fire button hammering are the way to go – but you need to be excruciatingly good over protracted periods of time as you wear away the legions of hellbeasts. Zig when you should zag more than a couple of times and you’re dogmeat. Many games demand flashes of brilliance: Final Doom requires you to bring your A-Game and keep on your toes until the last Demon has dropped.
