2 – Character Creation

Conan might be a fantasy world but there's no Orcs and Elves here - however, that doesn't necessarily mean character creation is simple and straightforward

Conan allows you to choose between three races for your character: the Stygians, Aquilonians and the Cimmerians, and you also have the pick of twelve character classes. These are categorised into four archetypes, and if the races are unknowns, these will certainly be familiar: Mage, Priest, Soldier, and Rogue. The race of your character restricts your choice of character class, but your statistics will not be affected; a Stygian assassin is just as powerful as an Aquilonian assassin. The only other difference between these races is the home cities you travel to after you move away from the starting city of Tortage. However, there are no restrictions on moving between these locations at any time.

The available classes are typical of RPG games in terms of their skills and competencies. Soldiers are the tanks of Age of Conan, for Rogues read rangers, while Priests and Mages are the usual healers and magical damage dealers. Within each of these categories there are three different sub-classes: one of these is always a pure example of the class, while the other two are hybrids, introducing some skills from other classes. A Herald of Xotli, for example, is a mage who uses both spells and melee attacks.
