PSUs

While a new CPU or graphics card could make a noticeable difference to which games and applications you can run on your PC, without a stable supply of power, all the costly upgrades you've made to your PC won't be worth a bean.

Verdict:

A good all-rounder that can be software-controlled.

The Odin GT is made by Channel Well Technology, one of the largest PSU manufacturers in the world.

Rated at 800W, this member of the Odin GT series has four 12V rails; 12V1 and 12V2 are rated up to 18A, and 12V3 and 12V4 up to 25A. However, combined, the 12V rails can't output more than 62A. The 12V1 rail is used to power CPU1, 12V2 powers CPU2 and the red modular PCI-E cable, 12V3 powers the motherboard and two hard-wired PCI-E cables, and 12V4 the disk drives and blue PCI-E modular sockets.

All four PCI-E cables have 6+2-pin connectors, which makes them compatible with all current graphics cards, even the GeForce 9800 GX2.

Like the 550W version, in addition to its quiet 140mm fan and modular cables, the Odin GT has another plus point - health monitoring. This is achieved via a USB cable and Windows applet, and allows you to check the temperature of the four bundled probes and the output of all the rails, plus adjust their outputs. However, as previously said, overvolting your entire PC isn't something we'd recommend.

In our tests, the Odin GT's rails proved to be stable at all load levels. It was also pretty efficient, averaging 82 per cent at full load. Anything above 80 per cent is commendable, but it's currently possible to buy PSUs that are 85 per cent efficient or more at high load levels.

The Odin GT is a good all-round PSU, being reasonably quiet and reasonably efficient. It also benefits from the inclusion of the useful health monitoring software.
