Verdict: A quality screen but not that great for games

The LCD1760NX is a sign of just how far along things have progressed. A year ago, this TFT would have been walking away with awards, plaudits, gongs and a year's supply of pet food. But these days, it's made to look simply ordinary - although it's still a quality screen.

The reason why it's still great is apparent as soon as you hook it up: Windows looks fantastic. It's sharp, bright, vivid and all things nice. Good viewing angles mean that using it is a pleasure too, and we found it tackled all our everyday tests with great aplomb. What's more, NEC-Mitsubishi earns kudos by including a DVI cable in the box so you can get the best possible picture from the word go. This is one factor that lifts it above all the less expensive models on show.

However, there is a 'but'. When we started playing games on the LCD1760NX, it showed enough lag to make us double-check that it really does have a 16ms response time. Although Unreal Tournament 2003 was still more than playable, and in terms of colour it was spot on, the irritating lag is enough to prevent us recommending this screen to a hardcore gamer.

The same was true of DVDs, with the Podrace sequence from 'Star Wars: Episode I' showing signs of both lag and artefacts; then again, none of the TFTs excelled in this test. We're pretty sure that the MultiSync's designers never really intended this screen to be used for movie playback anyway, with the lack of speakers notable in the group test. Another sign of its more professional aspirations is its comprehensive selection of controls in the OSD, including four customisable colour temperatures.

There's more to like too, with an adjustable height stand and a reasonably slim bezel of 17mm. And when you take the DVI cable into account, its price of £363 is pretty competitive. But we're looking for screens that can also handle gaming, and sadly that proved to be one of the MultiSync's weaker areas.
