PSUs

Modern PCs require much more power than they did a few years ago, which means that the PSU is now one of its most important components. That's why we've put 29 commonly available PSUs to the test to see which one really deserves to power your PC.

Verdict: Last year's winner with added PCI-E support, but it's beginning to show its age

The TG480-U01 was the winner of last year's PSU Labs test, although the model currently in the shops has been slightly upgraded.

It still has a 28A 3.3V rail, 48A 5V rail and 28A 12V rail, for a combined total output of 480W. The cooling system, comprising two temperature-controlled 80mm fans, remains the same too, so it's still pretty quiet for a 480W PSU, even at 100 per cent load. The upgraded TG480-U01 also supports both 20- and 24-pin ATX motherboards, and has both 4-pin ATX12V and 8-pin EPS12V connectors. However, a pair of PCI-E connectors replace two of the Molex connectors, leaving eight. The TG480-U01 isn't Nvidia SLI certified.

The TG480-U01 passed all the voltage stability tests bar one. Although the 12V rail passed when tested on its own, it failed when the 3.3V and 5V rails were also stressed to 100 per cent, jumping to 12.73V, well outside the 12.6V limit cited by the ATX spec. Efficiency is reasonable, averaging 74 per cent at 100 per cent load. This means it will need to draw 657W from the mains when producing 484W.

The Tagan is still an impressive PSU, but its single 12V rail means that it isn't perfectly suited to a modern PC in which the load is designed to be spread over multiple 12V rails. Producing 12.73V on the 12V rail could also damage some of your PC's components.
