PSUs

Modern PCs require much more power than they did a few years ago, which means that the PSU is now one of its most important components. That's why we've put 29 commonly available PSUs to the test to see which one really deserves to power your PC.

Verdict: God-like amounts of power, but it's very noisy

Under the hood, this PSU is exactly the same as the Akasa PowerPlus 650W, which is hardly surprising, as both PSUs are manufactured by Enhance.

Appropriately enough, given its godly name, the Zeus is a very powerful PSU and is rated at 650W. The 3.3V rail is rated at 33A and the 5V rail at 24A, while the four 12V rails are divided up with 13A for 12V1, 18A for 12V2, 16A for 12V3 and 8A for 12V4.

Connectors are provided for both 20- and 24-pin motherboards, plus there's an extra 8-pin EPS12V connector for dual-CPU and dual-core CPU motherboards. There are also six Molex, two FDD, four S-ATA and two PCI-E connectors. The Zeus is Nvidia SLI certified.

The maximum combined load of the four 12V rails is a hefty 42A, and so we tested the PSU by splitting the load accordingly - 7A from 12V1, 15A from 12V2, 11.6A from 12V3 and 5A from 12V4. Even at this setting, with 20A being drawn from the 5V rail and 21A from the 3.3V rail, the outputs of all the rails were perfectly stable. The Zeus also proved to be reasonably efficient, averaging 75 per cent at full load, which means it had to draw 854W from the mains to produce 638W.

Unfortunately, the Zeus lives up to its name in other ways too, as its cooling fan rumbles like thunder, although we didn't spot any wrathful lighting bolts. With quieter PSUs available at a similar price, we have to wonder why you'd bother buying a PSU this noisy.
