DDR2 RAM

Without high-frequency ram you won't be able to overclock your intel core2 or socket AM2 athlon 64 CPU far. As this labs test shows, you don't need to spend a fortune on DDR2 RA to achieve great results.

Verdict: DDR2 that fails to run at its rated speed

Like all HyperX kits, the DIMMs that make up the KHX6400D2LLK2/2G are dressed up in lightning-blue heatspreaders. Unfortunately, these heatspreaders don't appear to help overclocking.

This kit is rated as PC2-6400, which means that it's guaranteed to run at up to 800MHz at 4 - 4 - 4 - 12 latency timings at 1.95V. Strangely, the KHX6400D2LLK2/2G refused to POST at these settings in our Core 2 test rig, and would only work stably with the frequency reduced to 667MHz. We contacted Kingston's tech support team about this issue, and it confirmed that it hadn't tested this kit with the Asus P5B Deluxe motherboard and were therefore unable to help us.

However, in our Athlon 64 test rig, the KHX6400D2LLK2/2G behaved perfectly, POSTing and running stably at 800MHz with 4 - 4 - 4 - 12 latency timings. Although the KHX6400D2LLK2/2G performed almost identically to the KHX5400D2K2/2G in the Paint Shop Pro and F.E.A.R. benchmarks, it was noticeably faster in the SuperPI 32M test, no doubt due to its higher bandwidth.

Like the other HyperX kits in this Labs test, the KHX6400D2LLK2/2G refused to overclock beyond its guaranteed settings. This makes the KHX6400D2LLK2/2G extremely poor value for money, especially as it wouldn't even run at 800MHz in our Core 2 test rig.
