DDR2 RAM

Without high-frequency ram you won't be able to overclock your intel core2 or socket AM2 athlon 64 CPU far. As this labs test shows, you don't need to spend a fortune on DDR2 RA to achieve great results.

Verdict: Reasonably fast and reasonably overclockable

Super Talent was one of the first memory manufacturers sell a 2GB kit of 1GHz DDR2 in the UK, but the T1000UX2G5 is no longer the fastest RAM around.

The T1000UX2G5 is rated as PC2-8000 DDR2, so it can run at up to 1GHz and, although it needs a hefty 2.2V, its timings are a fairly leisurely 5 - 5 - 5 - 15.

As a non-overclocked Core 2 system is unable to run the T1000UX2G5 at its native 1GHz speed, we were forced to test them at 889MHz for the standard performance benchmarks. In this configuration, the T1000UX2G5 proved to be a reasonable performer, but it was nothing special. The highest memory speed that a non-overclocked Athlon 64 system supports is 800MHz, so this was the frequency at which we tested the T1000UX2G5 in our Athlon 64 test rig, where it also wasn't particularly inspiring.

Even when we increased the T1000UX2G5's input voltage to 2.35V and overclocked both test PCs, the highest frequency at which it would run stably was 1GHz at its default latency timings. However, by dropping the timings to 6 - 6 - 6 - 18, it happily ran at 1.1GHz.

Although the T1000UX2G5 isn't the most expensive PC2-8000 kit, it doesn't have much overclocking potential. Considering that you can buy better-performing and more overclockable 2GB kits for less money, these modules fail to impress.
