DDR2 RAM

Without high-frequency ram you won't be able to overclock your intel core2 or socket AM2 athlon 64 CPU far. As this labs test shows, you don't need to spend a fortune on DDR2 RA to achieve great results.

Verdict: Extremely cheap for a 2GB kit, but a poor overclocker

Its amazing to think that this Super Talent 2GB kit costs less than a third of the cost of Super Talent's most expensive kit, the T1000UX2G4 (see p77). In fact, the T6UB1GC5 is the cheapest 2GB DDR2 memory kit in this Labs test, costing just £116.58.

Despite the T6UB1GC5's low price, it doesn't have rubbish specifications. For starters, it's rated as PC2-5300, so it's guaranteed to run at up to 667MHz at latency timings of 5 - 5 - 5 - 13. If you aren't overclocking it, the T6UB1GC5 needs just 1.85V, so it's well suited to media PCs or small form factor systems, in which cooling is limited.

As Core 2 systems aren't sensitive to latency timings, the T6UB1GC5 performed pretty well in the majority of our benchmarks, with the exception of the SuperPI 32M test. The T6UB1GC5 wasn't a spectacular performer in the Athlon 64 test rig either.

Like most of the cheaper kits, the T6UB1GC5 wouldn't overclock at all at its stock latency timings but, by increasing its voltage to 2V and dropping its timings to 6 - 6 - 6 - 18, we managed to overclock it to 852MHz. This is hardly an earth-shattering overclock, but it's still welcome, considering the T6UB1GC5's incredibly low price.

However, for the ultimate in low-priced overclocking RAM, the bargaintastic Crucial CT2KIT12864AA53E is hard to beat.
