AMD shows off 3GHz quad core Phenom

Posted at: 5:27am 27th July 2007 by Ben Hardwidge

AMD shows that its native quad core architecture can still reach high clock speeds

After announcing that its forthcoming quad-core Barcelona chips would debut at just 2GHz, many critics were concerned about the scalability of AMD’s new native quad-core architecture. However, AMD has quickly responded by showing off a 3GHz quad-core Phenom X4 system.

Interestingly, the CPU appears to be cooled by a standard heatsink and fan, which suggests that the new architecture doesn’t produce too much heat, even at 3GHz. The demo system also featured three Radeon HD 2900XT cards.

32/64

probs an ovbious noobish question but, it says 32bit operating system.. dus that mean it wont support 64??? =O

Decisions, decisions...

And to think I was set on Core 2 for my next PC... NOW WHAT AM I GOING TO DO? GIVE ME BENCHMARKS!!1! XD

o.O

Could be good if the benchmarks come back ok, shed loads of overclocking avalible if it really does run with that stock cooler. One thing though... are you sure they said Phenom X4 @ 3ghz?? or Phenom X4 3000 which runs @ 1.362hz??? LMAO!!

3GHz with stock cooling

Four cores at 3GHz with stock cooling is pretty good. Running a current Intel quad-core a 3GHz (at stock voltage) would push the Intel cooler to limit, although it would do it. It will be interesting to compare temps (and performance).

------

as to the comment about the case, air cooling is not entirely about the number of fans, the cooler master stackers have an insane number of fans but they are also very well layed out, the antec P180/2/P190's/900 have almost as good cooling, the akasa eclipse is slightly better, and there are many other cheap cases that have respectable cooling, the stacker is just used as it has alot of space, great cooling, and is just usualy the standard. the fact is that this is a quad core processor at 3ghz with an amd stock cooler, no matter what case it is in this is an impressive feat, the case means that there is little to no heat interfearence from the gpu's and such. now where are the benchmarks? i hardly find vista performance rating substantial no matter how high it is, but this is still a good pice of information, it shows that amd is ready to start building hype. who knows we may even see a few people with ill-legitimately obtained copys around the net in a month or so.

Nah.................

Well for those who dont realise this, i have the NZXT zero case..... and by god, once you replace the stock fans with a lot of akasa blue led (57-60cfm) fans you basicly created a tornado, rather than a wind tunnel! :) [[ohh and btw i had this case MONTHS before any custom pc business started using them such as cyber link or Custompc even realised its existance!!]] Anyway besides the point, it could be a PR stunt using the stock cooler etcetc..... no extra evidence of facts on its abilities, so its still not making any dents on the new intel fortress... but however this would likely accelerate intels current strategy on its forthcoming chips, ahead of the current core2's..... making this even better that AMD are still in the market, so us Intel fans can now gain even more than we did before :) Caught AMD with their pants down... Priceless :D

This All sounds great but the case will have so much of a part in this setup we can see in the pics and it's probably the reason those graphics haven't melted

Not convinced

I have a ATI X800GTO with 512MB Graphics Card that reads 5.9 on the Vista scale. but on the GAMING GRAPHICS scale it only reads 4.9! We have to wait and see

Hmm, on air?

OK so yeah its on air, but how many people have 4 120mm fans on their side and how fast are those things going? If they are all at say 5000 rpm then air is easily feasable but it will sound like a jet.

Do we all really think AMD would code name the proc AMD Engineering Sample..... If we do I'm very worried.

Comment by Vectis_UK at 5:28pm 28th July 2007

Yeah

Thank god if they do prove to be good and fairly resonably priced , i wont have to get rid of my mobo :DDDD

MattZani

When will these be available? i need a new AMD Dual core, and if they can get these speeds on a quad as stock!

Comment by MattZani at 3:00pm 28th July 2007

I want to see what the quad core AM3's can really do before i buy into any new pc setup. But if AMD can really get the chip up to 3GHz on air and match the Intel Core2 then it will get my cash. P.S. You need to put down a little manure if you want to grow roses :P

Comment by Omegahunter at 10:16am 28th July 2007

I want badly :D:D:D:D leave Intel Still AMD are the Best :D

Comment by chris89 at 10:17pm 27th July 2007

Can anyone else smell that?
