AMD announces quad CrossFire

Posted at: 12:32pm 30th July 2007 by Ben Hardwidge

Huge power supplies needed to feed four hungry graphics cards

It’s not often that a sequel wins praise from the critics, so AMD must be hoping that its forthcoming CrossFire 2.0 technology has more in common with ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ than ‘Dirty Dancing 2.’ It certainly looks set to be pretty epic, as it allows you to turn up to four GPUs in CrossFire mode.

The technology forms a part of AMD’s new ‘Leo’ platform, which is scheduled for launch in 2008. The platform will be based on AMD’s forthcoming RD800-series of motherboard chipsets, which will be required to get the four GPUs running, and will also support AMD’s forthcoming AM2+ Phenom X2 and X4 CPUs. Meanwhile, the GPUs will be based on AMD’s next generation of R700-series chips, which will be manufactured on a 55nm process.

AMD refers to the technology as ‘DirectX 10 performance scaling,’ and announced the plan at its Analyst Day last week.

broken pencil....

pointless! pr stunt although amd need all they can get now there relations to public are capsisin quicker than the titanic with jonny vagas stood at the front. beides consuming more natural resouces (with 4 cards) than arnie swarzeneggers hummer. wont give any proformance benifits at all! and the noise from the hsf would probably even have ozzy and the rest of black sabbath round a youre front door. and youre mother board would probably take as big as a sumowrestlers plate to have 4 pci e 16x + room for the dual cooling and be left with enough room to fit a pci slot annd pci 1x slot. its no newwer than that repeat of only fools and horses is this "showof power" because we all know it could be done. i mean of course like dual core the next obvious step is quad same in graphics. we should file this to the back of our minds because the only ones really impressed by the show ( not how the hell they found a psu to power these is beyond belief, a greater feat would be to have sum working drivers ) would be noobs

DOH....!

AMD should sort out drivers for single HD2900 XT first, then I wouldn't have to keep restarting GRW2 coz of memory errors....

amd ati all is lost

it seems to me that amd ati have lost the plot they had the lead over intel intel because they listened to the people that mattered now its just push out tecnolgy for the sake of it and leave all the fanboys to take the hit baahhhhhhhh

AMD

Any one else think AMD are starting to panic as Intel and nVidia run off in the lead?? lol

4 x HD2900's ??? You could almost watch the dial on you electricity meter going round, assuming you could find a PSU that could power them.

if you think about it getting 4 2900xt's would just about put it in the same price range as 2 8800 ultras and most of you guys dont seem to get it having 4 gpus of almost anykind in any case is not practicle thats why it called ultra high end :P so a little bit of noise and heat should all be part of the game to get the fastest pc

On apositive note, just think if you're building your own rig. "Now I have to re design everything to cope with the extra size! and disipate all that heat. More pipes for my water cooling more fans, wheres best to put them??? It's Soooooo exciting!!" Ok, it's not my personal view but I bet there's someone out there with a stiffy

-------

well keep in mind that these will be based on a 55nm process so heat will be less of a problem. and while the G88's out perform the HD2900XT's in games the amd cards have more power in other tasks like folding, imagine the power of a quad GPU system with a quad core cpu at 3ghz or more. that would simply be a monstrous folding tower.

Can't stand the heat?

Aside from the obvious driver/game support issues, heat is going to be a major concern, as gavomatic57 says. One 2900XT puts out a lot of heat, so 4 will turn your PC (and computer room) into a sauna! Still, saves on the heating bills...

AMD

Surely they need to be concentrating on one GPU that works properly, uses less electricity than a small town and doesn't sound like a hoover, rather than bolting 4 average GPU's together that'll probably melt your PC case from the inside.

Comment by gavomatic57 at 5:08pm 30th July 2007

crossfire/sli doesn't work half the time with 2 cards... why would 4 be any different?

Comment by RedFlames at 2:58pm 30th July 2007

lol this is for them people who want to show off... mmm could i use a load of hd 2400 will not cost me too much lmao

Comment by megapig at 1:51pm 30th July 2007

If you ask me it's basically like a publicity stunt, and if people want 'the best of the best' go to ATI. When the 8800 GTX came out I thought that was over the top, but this is just ludicrous.

Comment by Typhoon2 at 1:39pm 30th July 2007

Surely this is totally unnecessary? I mean, two GPUs is unnecessary for most people already.
