Consoles holding back PC graphics, says Epic boss

Posted at: 6:01am 31st July 2007 by Ben Hardwidge

Not ‘economically viable’ to do the super high-end stuff, says Mark Rein

Vice president of games developer Epic, Mark Rein, has blasted the games console industry for holding back graphics development in PC games.

‘I don't see people going way, way over what these consoles can do because then they can't sell the game,’ said Rein, ‘they have to dumb the games down for the consoles. Consoles will pretty much define what the next five years of games look like on the PC.’ Rein also said that ‘super high-end stuff’ was becoming less ‘economically viable.’

One of the PC gaming business’ most outspoken commentators, Rein made the statements in an interview with CVG. The problem is basically economics; you need to put a lot of money into developing a game with DirectX 10 graphics, and you’re not going to get a lot of financial return on that if the game is only available on the PC.

As Rein said, ‘if you build the game that's a really super amazing high-end game, how do you make all the money you could make from that game? Because it'll be too high end eventually to be on PS3 or Xbox 360.’ Rein also added that the forthcoming game Crysis was likely to be the pinnacle of DirectX 10 graphics until the next generation of consoles comes out.

ps3 and x-box 360 wasent out when oblivion came, so it a little strange to blame console for destroying oblivion... I cant understand one thing. I remember the ps2, and damn. Its a little stunning to see what they are able to do with that machine. And ps2 is'nt a hi-end machine. Then there is ps3, it goth a cell-core. Still beating the shit out of computer (in teori) but it has alott of power that is unused. The power of the RSX isnt superb, but we have the cell. The cell is there the potentials lays. But the are problems like ram (memory). 512mb ram is not much these days, but you hva to remember that it dosent need as much memory like a pc. The pc has many thinks running in the background, windows etc. If the gamemakers can learn to use the cell and its potential i think the games can run better with more graphics and so on. When it comes to ram im not sure. But this machine has potential, and we will see it when programmers learn how to use this machine. Like we see on the ps2 today.

Console fun

First off I would just like to make it clear that serious gamers play on low settings (bar view distance) because other players and objects are less detailed which makes them stand out more. Secondly DX10 games are only just starting to appear and they do look AMAZING and im sure maxed out they will quite easily push the 8800 series to their limits. And finally I would just like to say that there is nothing that can beat the look of you mates face when he's boasting about his new PS3 and its graphics when you show him a scene from 3dmark06 and then tell him that that’s the old generation of PC graphics! :-D

what??

So how many people actually have DX10 graphics cards if an ultra high-end game were to come out? and how many computers could run this game, never mind the consoles!!!! Its better to concentrate on gameplay, graphics don't count much for fun.

"Seriously competitive gamers in multiplayer minimise all their settings anyway" Why, although GFX are not a requirement to fun (gameplay should and will always be paramount) surely there is little reason not to turn settings up to max if a playable rate can be held. Why should I not run counter strike at max settings when I still get a framerate of 120+ fps on heavy duty custom maps?

as was previously stated not all machine are capable of having the settings as they should be. but a way round this would be to reduce what can be seen on machines with lower settings so as not to give an advantage. for example, if someone is hiding in long grass, currently, you turn the settings down, and can see them. how about making that person invisable unless they move or stand up

Settings

Seriously competitive gamers in multiplayer minimise all their settings anyway. Really most of the top of the line graphics effects are best reserved for single player games. If a multiplayer game is relying on graphics to be popular it won't be around long.

Regarding lag in games, it is an issue. I was in BF2 which was maxed out with full AA and AF and 1680x1050. Usually handles it fine but when I was laying in some long grass the frame rates dipped below 15 fps and I was nailed by someone running towards me. the screen stuttered and took me too long to line up. While I agree this is an issue, making everyone run the same settings is nonsense as we all have different screens and needs from our PC's and we can't all afford a 8800gtx. If you want that then go and buy a console. The simple answer is to reduce your graphics settings for online play so you can play smoothly throughout.

Consoles must die

Its not just the graphics that are retarded in console games (and I use the term in terms of its actual meaning, not as an insult). The scale of games is reduced, the difficulty, the complexity, all are scaled back for the consoles. Sometimes it works; I must admit Rainbow Six: Vegas on the PC is probably as good as any of the others even if it is a banal run and gun fest rather than a real tactical shooter. However a lot of games, Oblivion for instance, suffered horribly from being made for the console too. The modding community have put the hours in on Oblivion so it is right up to speed now, but on release it was a bit lacking. I think claiming Crysis is as good as it will get for the PC is a bit silly though. Crysis is probably as good as this generation of graphics cards can do anyway, but more and more graphics is about the art and concepts, not the system power.

I'm not sure what Mizugetsu is on about here as the "lag" he is suffering has nothing to do with the graphics settings. However I must agree that consoles are holding back PC users. Many games hardly push my 8800GTX and with those games not being able to get much more demanding on the GFX card I cant see things getting much better.

This Man Is My Kindred Spirit I Don't know about anyone else but i'm fed up with graphics ingame playing a major factor in multiplayer games the most notible of this would be ghostrecon Adavanced warfighter 2 with everything ingame on maximum within a Ultra high end PC and i will be running toward someone who is running toward me and i stop first and fire and he kills me is rediculous if ppl are gonna play online then everyones settings shouldbe exactly the same in terms of detail
