It's Dream PC week, beginning with a video of 2006 winner Vadim's £10,000 entry for this year's competition
At Custom PC we only run one PC labs test a year: the Dream PC competiton. Once every twelve months we challenge a select group of PC manufacturers to enter a very simple, but very demanding competition: build the best PC you can, money no object. This year, we imposed only two requirements on the four invited manufacturers: the systems had to be supplied with a monitor capable of displaying a 1,920 x 1,200 image; and they must have some form of Windows Vista installed (although Windows XP could be included too), so that we could try out the latest DirectX 10 games.
This year, our four entrants - Dell, Gladiator, Scan and Vadim - submitted PCs toting 57.16GHz worth of CPUs, 15GB of RAM, 6.14GB of graphics RAM, 6.57TB of hard disk space and 4kW of power.
Our analysis of these four incredible PCs will be in Issue 50 of the magazine, which is out for subscribers at the end of this week and on newstands on the 27th of September. To whet your appetites however, every day this week we'll be featuring a video of one of the entrants on www.custompc.co.uk.
Day One: Vadim
Day Two: Dell
Day Three: Gladiator
Day Four: Scan
To kick off Dream PC week 2007, where better to begin with the entry from Vadim, makers of the winner of the 2006 competition? Without further ado, here's the Xiphias - over £10,000 worth of PC, complete with four SSD drives in RAID:
But the video doesn't seem to capture it very well. To the people that cut it, please use brighter lighting, focus it a bit tighter and don't cut such short shots. It's really hard to see the detail when there's so much motion and short shots. This thing isn't a model or an auto, so I really don't think it should get the same editing style.
Easily my favorite system so far. Forward looking, solid specs, and SSD drives in RAID. I love it, but now I gotta wait for the price of those drives to come down...and if only they'd get rid of the rocketship taking off, like we're 10 year old gamers or something. Everything is flawless, excellent work. It doesn't need a decent price to be a Dream PC, or else everyone would drive a Lamborghini around North Dakota
Seriously subscribing would be nice (lovely covers) but the delay in the mag arriving means I just buy it monthly in Easons on O'Connell St (Main distributer of magazines in Ireland) As it's there pretty much on the date each month. As for the Vandium, so many damn fans! Looks good as usual. They always make a nice box.
@akoli - Hey dude, we do indeed offer worldwide subs! Check out the forums for info: http://www.custompc.co.uk/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=199972
Since leaving the Uk I'm now 2 months behind when it comes to getting your mag...dont know if they are passed from country to country by donkey but hey.....so I'll get to read the review by xmas !!! In the meantime I can drool over the website ....any chance of having worldwide subrscriptions like other mags do .....£10k if I had the money I would get a beast like this although my £2.5k machine is more than sufficient ....I look forward to the daily updates .....
that i could make a living from fiddling with and playing games on computers worth over £10,000. you guys don't know how lucky you have it :(
£10,000... what the flying f***...i mean really...
Its nice to see the systems in CPC moving and working. Two photos in a mag never show all the angles you want. Maybe videos of PC's is the way to go....
When I saw Dell mentioned. I'm very curious as to what they might be offering up against the likes of Vadim and Scan.
I look forward to this as this will be the first time I get to see the feature (sadly quite new to CPC) I would love to own any of the systems. Cant wait for the mag!
I remeber being gob smacked last year with the number of fans vadim managed to squeeze into the case. Looks like this year they've managed to better themselves and fit more and more fans in.
