Dream PCs 2007: Gladiator

Posted at: 10:52am 20th September 2007 by Alex Watson

Day three of Dream PC week and we've got video of the machine from a new entrant this year, UK-based Gladiator

Dream PCs 2007

At Custom PC we only run one PC labs test a year: the Dream PC competiton. Once every twelve months we challenge a select group of PC manufacturers to enter a very simple, but very demanding competition: build the best PC you can, money no object. This year, we imposed only two requirements on the four invited manufacturers: the systems had to be supplied with a monitor capable of displaying a 1,920 x 1,200 image; and they must have some form of Windows Vista installed (although Windows XP could be included too), so that we could try out the latest DirectX 10 games.

This year, our four entrants - Dell, Gladiator, Scan and Vadim - submitted PCs toting 57.16GHz worth of CPUs, 15GB of RAM, 6.14GB of graphics RAM, 6.57TB of hard disk space and 4kW of power.

Our analysis of these four incredible PCs will be in Issue 50 of the magazine, which is out for subscribers at the end of this week and on newstands on the 27th of September. To whet your appetites however, every day this week we'll be featuring a video of one of the entrants on www.custompc.co.uk.

Day One: Vadim

Day Two: Dell

Day Three: Gladiator

Day Four: Scan

To continue Dream PC week 2007, we've got some footage of Gladiator's Poseidon CPCQX6850. It features all the latest components - two 1TB Hitachi Disks, 4GB of RAM, 64-bit Vista and two overclocked GeForce 8800 Ultras, and a water-cooling system with a huge tube reservoir:

Quite a bit of watercooling effort for such a small overclock, even if the x6850 starts at 3GHz. C'mon, can't companies take these kind of competitions seriously? Think nobody's reading? For the money, why would I spend this much to get exactly what I could accomplish at home? What's the deciding factor about buying from Gladiator? According to this piece of work, not a whole lot...

Comparing the 3 so far

Well I thought the Dell and Vadim should have been in different competitions as the price suggested. Now Gladiator put out a PC with the price tag of the Dell but the Spec more towards the Vadim. How did they do that? Or is the Vadim PC simply too overpriced to be competitive?

Dream Machine?

Well i wouldnt mind this machine myself, but 2x 1TB HDDs? for what paticular reason? i dont know any gaming pc yet to require that much space, and the only other gripe is windows vista! i have recently purchased my 2nd self build and used vista, what a nightmare! more than enough issues not being able to play games without it crashing and starting again. i believe win xp would be a better OS untill vista has a service pack, but does a dream machine costing more than £4000 make you a better gamer? im not sure

Why you you opt for 2 x 8800 Ultras and only have a 24 Inch Monitor ??????? Point? None......................... Other than that looking good !! and nice to see it uses 64 bit, and using 4gb of RAM, plenty of quad gorrrry goodness :D 8 / 10

A dream pc that is reachable.

This machine is well spec'd and reachable in price. Is it just me or does the video focus mostly on the water cooling. But I would love to own this beast.

hmmm this is a nice pc fianlly something to really compete with Vadim's monster of a machine. Though the reservoir on the top is a nice touch but if that thing bursts or leaks and gets into the machine you've had it i prefer the reservoir to be on the back out of harms way. Also this machine is very nicely priced to be fair, Vadim may have more raptors than jurrassic park and a massive water cooling system with more fans than boyzone had but for £10K it does seem a little over priced.... dont you think?
