New BETA BIOS for the Mars brings more flexible overclocking options for Penryn users
Overclockers could soon be doubling the amount of time they spend fiddling around with their BIOS settings, as Foxconn has just introduced a BIOS that can increase your CPU’s multiplier in increments of 0.5, rather than just whole numbers.
However, the feature will only work on Intel’s new CPUs based on its 45nm Penryn architecture, such as the Core 2 Extreme QX9650. To take advantage of the feature, you need to update your BIOS to the G26 BETA, which is available from Foxconn’s Quantum-Force website, although you have to register first.
Foxconn’s technical consultant for the Quantum Force range, Peter Tan, said that the ‘.5 multiplier increment will give enthusiasts more flexibility when it comes to overclocking, so we should see higher clock speeds running in a stable environment.’
This isn’t the first new feature for overclockers that Foxconn has introduced with the Mars motherboard. In August, the company also announced that the board would have an amazing choice of 504 different CPU voltages.
i dont think this is a new overclocking feature. i'm pretty sure ihave seen it somewhere else, like the DFI SLI-DR i have. i might be remembering wrong...
you get amazing overclocks on low end Intel Core 2 Duos anyway....... people have been getting E4400's up to and beyond 3Ghz since their release.
I half agree with marcgear the the only people this will be useful for are those with unlocked multipliers. Those CPUs are the ones that cant much beat a lower spec CPU anyway. But hopefully with changes like this intel will look at moving more CPUs to an unlocked mulitplier. Something like the Q6600 'could' have a version with unlocked multipliers for less money that the QX???? overpriced monsters. This could lead to some very nice OCs on low end kit.
If you have the money to afford a CPU with a unlocked multiplier, which you can't get much faster than you can a cheaper CPU on FSB oc'ing alone.
