Rumour control: Nvidia GeForce 9 in February 2008

High end 65nm chip is alleged to support DirectX 10.1

Rumour Control

The beginning of next year looks set for the next generation of high-end graphics cards, with ATI launching its dual-chip Radeon HD 3700 X2 cards and, so the rumour goes, Nvidia bringing out its next generation GeForce 9 series of GPUs in February.

Like the new Radeon HD 3800 chips, DigiTimes says that the GeForce 9 series will support DirectX 10.1 and Shader Model 4.1. The site claims to have spoken to graphics card makers over in Taiwan, who say that the first chip will be codenamed D9E, and will be a ‘high-end product that adopts 65nm manufacturing.’ The site’s sources also said that a mid-range 55nm GeForce 9 part, codenamed D9P, will be released later in June 2008.

We’ve seen very little action in the high-end graphics arena since Nvidia completely misjudged its spoiler for ATI’s Radeon HD 2900XT launch with the overpowered GeForce 8800 Ultra. Instead, the last few months have seen the main focus shift to mid-range graphics cards, such as the GeForce 8800 GT and Radeon HD 3850.

Nvidia refused to comment on the story, simply saying that 'we do not comment on unnanounced products or rumours.'

Okok first off, we only just get into the Whole Directx 10 saga, now we find out every card in the business at the minute is going to suck or not even be very good in directx10 ? Will games only support 4.1 shader model? Or will all our currenct dx10 hardware be compatible with a simple soft-side upgrade?

Lol @ you losers

Sure, AMD/ATi are going to come out of nowhere and "surprise" Nvidia. It doesn't work like that. IF AMD has created a graphics card other than the 3800 that is worth buying, they wouldn't "hold it in reserve". That would make the consumers angry and noone will buy it. But... you keep wishing, oh, little fanboy.

Happy with my 8800GTX for sometime to come I think...Crysis runs well, COD4 runs well; not much else will push it harder for a while (6 more months before another upgrade?)

To chrissss4.........

The 8800GT is 'midrange' due to the price. High end is obviously £300+ But that doesnt reflect the real world performance of the card.

8800gt = midrange ?

A 8800GT offers performance to a 8800GTX, the GT is 2%-10% slower than the GTX, so why is that midrange? Anyways, I hope the 9800 will offer some power so that crysis can be played maxed out with AA on high resolutions :)

You losers

i dont think you guys actually realise... well let me put it this way. AMD are hiding at the moment in stealth but theyre gonna JUMP!!! out on you guys and crush nvidia and i know for a fact thats gonna happen on January the 23rd.im not telling you guys what they are going to do but be prepared make sure you get 2 ultras together before then to save you the embarrasment. suggestion: try to hack 3Dmark so you can pretend you got an higher score because beleive me you'll need it.

How is it that the "high end" nvidia cards will be 65nm while the "mid-range" 55nm? Shouldn't it be the other way round?

hmmmm.....

my 8800gtx is still £400 quid to buy... how much is one of these gonna cost i wonder......

oh well

My 8800GTX will last me for a while yet...

Comment by dedlite at 9:58am 1st December 2007

And I just bought my 8800GT...

Ho hum. Still, if it comes with a high-end price tag similar to the GTXs/Ultras now at least I know I'd never have forked out for one and can just look on enviously at all those people with buckets o' cash who buy one.

I hope Nvidia bring out a high end single GPU - no way I'm spending £300+ on what is essentially an SLI (or Crossfire) setup with an X2 card. Single cards are still the way to go, especially at medium to low resolutions imho!

Comment by combatus at 5:09pm 30th November 2007

all sounds about true. i think that x2 ati card will be out first and possibly come close to the gtx performance? then it will be 9 series kicking down everything again.

Comment by jaxxersist at 1:11pm 30th November 2007

if ATI are to bring out a card Nvidia will for sure have something up there sleeve
