Rumour control: Intel to introduce P45 chipset in January 2008

Posted at: 5:30am 7th December 2007 by Ben Hardwidge

Cheaper than the X48, but still offering a 1,600MHz front side bus

P45

P45 might be a redundant name to anyone in the UK, but that hasn’t stopped Intel from apparently using the name for its next mainstream motherboard chipset. According to a motherboard manufacturer that we’ve spoken to, Intel is planning to introduce the new chipset in 2008, possibly as early as January, and the rumour is that it will basically be the same as the P35, but with a 1,600MHz front side bus.

The timing of the launch sounds about right to us, as Intel is also planning to launch its first CPU with a 1,600MHz front side bus, the Core 2 Extreme QX9770, in January 2008. Intel also plans to announce its X48 chip for enthusiasts at this time, which supports the 1,600MHz front side bus as well.

Gigabyte GA-X48T-DQ6

X48 is for sale online! Delivery some weeks... interesting... And I was going to order the X38, price is roughly the same (<260€) so why not wait a little.

ooh!

i've just realised.... X48 and Intel Skulltrail are being released at the same time... coincidence? i reckon January is when we are going to be seeing Quad SLi, dual CPU Intel motherboards.

Noob question...

How many installs do you get with a OEM license? 3? So if motherboard is change you will need a full reinstall?

Understand...

Ahhh... I get ya.

motherboard woes

OEM licence won't allow a new motherboard, well, it'll not boot unless microsoft allow it to be so, and Im not sure on the odds of them allowing it through, basically, I (or any other OEM buyer, that includes people buying premade PC's) can't make a major upgrade any time soon.

unseen death is referring to the OEM licence for vista which is tied to your motherboard - if you wanted to upgrade to the new x45 chipset and have purchased vista oem then there is a good likelyhood that the oem licence will become invalid and microsoft don't have to re activate.....

???

unseendeath... Can you explain your comment about the motherboard relating to the purchase of vista???

Comment by PokerMuppet at 12:08am 8th December 2007

aah thats unfair

Bought a P35 back in september, already out of date? well I guess thats okay, but I would of liked it to last slightly longer! buying an OEM vista doesn't seem so useful now.

PCI 2.0

I would think PCI-e 2.0 would be standard as its already on the X38 and when have you ever heard of technology going backwards? Also, with the P45 and X48 chipsets due out within the next couple of months... The P35 and the X38 must be 2 of the shortist lived chipsets EVER.

Comment by PokerMuppet at 10:54pm 7th December 2007

Won\'t this make X38 redundant then? Seeing as X38 can \

P45 - PCI 2.0?

Anyone got any insight on whether it will be supplied with PCI 2.0 support?
