A new socket, loads more pins and a hell of a lot of silicon
Processors have generally become smaller as technology has progressed, but it looks as though Intel's new Nehalem CPUs are going to dwarf today's Core 2 chips if these photos are anything to go by.
A forum user on Expreview called sxs112.tw obviously has some close ties with tech sources in Taiwan, as they've apparently managed to snap some shots of the forthcoming CPU. When placed next to a current Core 2 QX9770, the 2.8GHz Nehlaem chip is clearly much bigger, showing that the new chips will require a new socket and will require many more pins than today's LGA775 sockets.
It looks as though LGA775 is nearing the end of its life, but it's had a good run, especially when compared with AMD's journey through Socket 939, AM2 and AM2+ in the same timeframe.

Do you reckon they'll rip us off again... if so just wait until AMD release these secrets that are going to be anounced over the next few days and then intel will be forced to lower the price get over to the forums for more news on the subject of AMD releasing some things that werent mentioned yet
new cpu . new mbrd . new psu probabliee . might even need a new case . sh t . when the hell is it on general ripoff to the gulllllable
I prefer pins on chips, replacing a MB is harder than a CPU!
an estimated 1438 pins on main face.. crazy numbers.. good job they too the pins off the chips and put them on the mobo. would hate too have the job of straightening a abused chip.

Wouldn't suprise me if the new socket has contacts in the lid as well as the base...
as this is probably a prototype they'll be using the pins on top to get multi meter readings...... but then am no cpu engineer....
"what is intel up to..... oh and what about 940 and socket F. least we didn't need to keep replacing our 775 boards...." That's a bit unfair as they are server boards - You need different sockets for Intel servers ie skt 771 too
I'm more interested in the pins on the top of the chip... what are they going to be for?
wait for it.......................................................... 775 pins... wtf.... i would've expected more lol
maybe we'll get true quad core cpus at a decent price... but i aint gonna have any faith in intel im just hoping Nvidia win this War that we've been told Intel and Nvidia are due to have... because Nvidia respect their customers more than intel
looks like 4 or possibly 8 cores depending on whether intel have come up with a 4 core die, pins on top that sounds like fun to fit...
any one have any idea what the pins on the top could be for?
