CeBIT 2008: Breathe easily with MSI's new air-purifying laptop

MSI demonstrates laptop that increases air quality by de-ionising the output from its exhaust fans

MSI's new air purifying laptop

CeBIT 2008: MSI has demonstrated a laptop at the CeBit trade show that, it claims, improves the air quality to the point that it's three times better than the air you can sample in the Alps. The new machine de-ionises the air output from its exhaust fan, creating air that has up to 300,000 anions (de-ionised particles) per cubic centimetre, while you’d typically find only 100,000 anions in rural mountainous areas.

The laptop is, MSI claims, an example of how it's trying to innovate with environmentally friendly IT equipment. MSI is aiming to 'show that there are more ways to do eco-friendly products than just talking about power saving,' according to Richard Stewart, Product Marketing Manager for MSI UK. However, Stewart also pointed out that the theory of de-ionised air making you feel better has not been proven scientifically. We saw the laptop working on the show floor at CeBIT 2008, complete with an anion measuring device, throwing out air that measured 174,000 anions/cc.

To complement the anion laptop, and arguably more usefully, MSI also had a working sample of its Stirling Engine Northbridge cooler and a GX600 laptop with new power saving technologies. The GX600 range curently features a Turbo button which can instantly overclock the CPU when the laptop is plugged in for maximum performance, but downclock the CPU and dim the screen when the laptop is unplugged in order to extend the battery life. 'At the moment we’re seeing 15 per cent more battery life on the current GX600-series gaming notebooks [with the new Turbo button],' said Stewart, 'hopefully in the future we can also turn off any additional I/O device that’s not necessary to extend that further.'

As yet there’s no launch date for an anion laptop or the new battery-saving version of the Turbo button, but we expect products soon.
