VIDEO: Taking apart the GeForce 9800 GX2

Posted at: 2:00pm 18th March 2008 by Ben Hardwidge

We get under the hood of Nvidia’s new dual GPU graphics card

Inside the Nvidia GeForce 9800 GX2

It’s got two PCBs, it costs £376 and it’s bigger than some dogs. The GeForce 9800 GX2 is no ordinary graphics card, and while many people would be happy to shove it straight in their PC and watch the frame rates go up, we couldn’t help wanting to dissect it to see what makes it tick.

Just what goes on under that colossal cooler? How do the two PCBs fit together? How big is the 9800 GX2 in comparison to a normal graphics card? All these questions and more are answered in our simple video below, where we attempt to satisfy your nose for curiosity by taking apart a GeForce 9800 GX2.

As you no doubt already know, the GeForce 9800 GX2 is Nvidia’s first official dual-GPU graphics system since the acclaimed GeForce 7950 GX2, but it’s quite a different beast, using a single cooing system to cover the two PCBs.

If you want the full skinny on the card, as well as its performance in games, then make sure you check out our full review of the GeForce 9800 GX2.

Comment by Mizugetsu at 5:43pm 19th March 2008

oh dear...

the cooler had better be darned good and quiet, as I can't see replacement cooler units being produced for some time with such a radically different design...

rickykemp = Tard first of all with all benching being done within 14 days i'm well within my rights to return a product and these are first batch 9800GX2 and of the 3 i've ordered 2/3 will be faulty and i'm on vista so the fault is inevitable and i've owned 6 8800GTX's of which the one i have now is the only one that hasn't died or gone nuts which 3 months and 4 learn to spell someone who's superiors name right moron

Comment by Mizugetsu at 12:10pm 19th March 2008

I was gonna say more like an in store video at Ikea, or Yorkshire trader, man those are rubbish. Is that the royalty free music Alex? I bet it is. Hopefully the GTX's will be something to shout about

Comment by joeamnesiac at 10:01am 19th March 2008

HAHAAHAHA PRONO!

hehe, is it just me, or is the way that video footage was shot look vaguely like a cheap softcore porno flick with the sleazy music to boot?! back to the model. i mean card. yeh it's 2 GTs with the bridge put in for you, but if you don't have SLI (like myself and many others) then this is your only option for "the highest" quality graphics. which IMO is a load of old tosh.

Comment by sotu1 at 8:32am 19th March 2008

on a custompc review that is lol

Comment by NikoBellic at 8:10am 19th March 2008

i like i like...

sorry about that i got 2 admit i didnt really do any looking into it, when i check the news i would expect them to try and answer the questions that everyone is due to ask, its like when you watch a youtube video your garunteed to see a comment saying whats the name of that song, they should just add it to the comments, with the date of pricing by the side of course

Comment by NikoBellic at 8:06am 19th March 2008

Original drivers when I had benchmarks first posted stated they'd problems with X48 and X38 - Especially the X48 - X48 crashed constantly, X38 had failures in games

Comment by Elemental_Dragon at 11:50pm 18th March 2008

looks like palit are doing it for £387 on scan

Comment by robbie_b24 at 9:22pm 18th March 2008

Niko You Tool

Check retailers before you think that these will cost stupid amounts... These are rated at upto 30 more percent faster than a gtx for a start... Second they are pricing at just over 400 pounds from scan.co.uk

Comment by Lightning_Pete at 9:19pm 18th March 2008

MMMmmmm.... nice

Shame that the design is starting to get old now... its just the 7800 gx2 crossed with a 8800 gts... which in my opinion doesn't seem all that great...but who knows... maybe this will be able to knock the gtx off the top spot which may lower the price of the gtx... but i wouldn't buy one of these... mmm... what price do you reckon it'll cost in the UK after taxes... i reckon about £744.99.

Comment by NikoBellic at 8:43pm 18th March 2008

@Elemental_Dragon

No idea where you've got that from - we tested ours on an Intel X38 test rig...

Comment by Sifter3000 at 6:15pm 18th March 2008

wow

wow they took 2 gts and installed the sli bridge for you!!

Comment by helipilot06 at 6:07pm 18th March 2008

It doesn't work on Intel chipsets - good job nvidia! *saracastic applaude*

Comment by Elemental_Dragon at 5:43pm 18th March 2008

Left over was...

1 small black screw....

Comment by Sifter3000 at 3:54pm 18th March 2008

"Did you have any bits left over when you put it back together ?" HE HE!! I bet they did!

Comment by combatus at 3:39pm 18th March 2008

Any word on the NDA for the 9800GTX? Let's see what Nvidia's best single GPU graphics card can do. Will it really be that much better than a 8800 Ultra?

Comment by l3v1ck at 3:16pm 18th March 2008

Did you have any bits left over when you put it back together ?

Comment by bluetuba at 3:15pm 18th March 2008

What were the results at maximum quality settings?

Comment by l3v1ck at 2:17pm 18th March 2008

@L3v1ck

Crysis at High. No, it wont do triple SLI, AFAIK

Comment by Sifter3000 at 2:12pm 18th March 2008

Me wants 3 now!

Do we know whether they can run 3 in triple sli on the new 790i boards? I think the price is pretty reasonable compared to the 8800 gtx and ultra's when they first came out. Any news on the rest of the 9 series high end line or is this now it?

Comment by crazy at 2:01pm 18th March 2008

Are the benchmarks with Crysis at medium, high or very high settings?

Comment by l3v1ck at 2:05pm 18th March 2008

SO it's more or less two 8800GTS's on one card that have been underclocked due to the HSF design. I certainly won't be paying that much cash for such a fudged solution.
