Rumour control: AMD to launch Radeon HD 3850 X2

Posted at: 10:35am 28th March 2008 by Ben Hardwidge

New dual GPU graphics card could cost under £150 if the rumours are to be believed

ATI / AMD Radeon HD 3870 X2

Following on from the release of its Radeon HD 3870 X2 in January, AMD / ATI is apparently planning to release a new X2 card based on its Radeon HD 3850 GPUs in order to entice budget-strapped gamers to the world of dual-GPU graphics.

The tech gossip pros at DigiTimes in Taiwan claim to have spoken to sources in the industry that say the new X2 card will support 512MB (2x 256MB) and 1GB (2x 512MB) memory configurations, using 1.8GHz DDR3 memory. The site claims that the card is scheduled for release in May, and will be positioned against Nvidia's 512MB GeForce 8800 GTS.

The best news, however, is the price. If the information on DigiTimes is correct, and bear in mind that this is all rumour here, then the new X2 cards could be priced as low as $299 US (£149.76) for a 512MB card.

Do you know the Price/Performance yet?... no... then dont shout around saying AMD's new GPU is crap, just see what AMD have got to say for themselves after that 18 months that they had died down, and then we may do a bit of mouthing about em, but for now lets see if it will become any more of a success than the 3870, after all Nvidia felt threatened by the 38x0 series thats why they had released the 9x00 series

Whats the point?

If u can afford a massive monitor to play games on then u can afford an expensive gfx card. If u can only afford a 19" monitor then an 8800GT is more than enuf and will prob still beat a Radeon 3850X2. So there is absolutely no point in mid range dual gpu cards as from all the tests that have been done, they are no faster than single gpu cards.

great for "budget" gamers!!!

i think this would be a great starter for people who are first timers at going above the £100 price point... now im just wishing i waited and bought this instead of my 3870 512 (£149)

hm, with crossfire X I wonder how one of these would pair with a 3870X2. Should be perfectly possible, and people have had very good results with a 3870 paired with a 3850 (Seems to give performance almost matchign a pair of 3870s)

a pair of these in crossfirex for under 300 quid sure looks tempting

Good to see that we can get two GPU's on a single PCB. Why Nvidia can't do that is beyond me. One PCB is much better for a quiet, effective cooling set up.

Good stuff

It certainly shows they have some confidence in dual card setups which is good as it means a 4870X2 might be on the cards as well! They need to sort their drivers out though, performance and stability have been ok but not exceptional and 8.3 blew any kind of relief out of the water. I'm currently using the hotfix which is essentially a beta of the 8.4 April release and the low FPS seems to be less of an issue. Lets hope things improve.

Oh thats tempting

Last time I looked 2 512MB 3850's were at about the same level as a overclocked GTX, so this is pretty tasty news.... CrossfireX could be quite a tempting proposition.

MMMmmm... nice!!!

maybe this will be part of AMD's decent price/performance range hey!!!
