OCZ launches 2GHz water cooled DDR3 memory

New super-fast memory kits can be water-cooled, and contains all the required tubing and barb adaptors

OCZ Flex II DDR3 memory

OCZ may have already been beaten to the 2GHz (PC16000) memory post by Corsair back in February, but that hasn’t stopped OCZ from trying to up the ante with a new 2GHz DDR3 memory kit that can even be water cooled.

OCZ's newly announced 2GB (2x 1GB) 2GHz DDR3 memory kits have latency timings of 8-8-8-28, while Corsair’s equivalent memory has latency timings of 9-9-9-24. As well as this, OCZ is also hoping that the memory’s Flex II heatsink will lure you its way.

The heatsink allows the memory to be cooled passively, but it can also be hooked up to a water loop. OCZ will be including 3/8in and 1/2in barb adaptors in the package (the barbs on the heatsink have an inner diameter of 1/4in), plus 40in of tubing and a four-way manifold barb. When connected to a water loop, the Flex II heatsink will direct the coolant over the memory chips.

The catchily named OCZ3FXT20002GK modules are specified to use a voltage of 1.9V, but OCZ says that overclockers can over-volt the memory to up to 1.95V before they invalidate their warranty.

OCZs last Flex memory was awesome

So watercooling isn't just useless. Extreme overclockers can easily push the hardware to the limits of air cooling and find watercooling useful. It is a bit crap though that OCZ only cover you for a 0.05V overclock, it seems like they're gradually lowering how much they warrant your memory for.

OCZ Flex Rules!

if you're only going to pur 1.9v through it then watercooling is over kill but with my DDR2 flex modules, I've had them at 2.4v and close to 1300mhz (PC10400 equiv) for nearly a year now. The sinks are cool but quickly go red hot if they're not watercooled. This is extreme RAM though and most Pc8500 modules can go over 1100mhz. I'd like to see the speeds achieved when upping the voltage more than 1.9v.

1.95v from 1.90v before warrenty invalidation - LOL. I love OCZ's memory, but this is desperate.

i think...

CrazyCeo's idea sounds less "Crazy" than OCZ's here, i have always been a fan of OCZ's but i just think this is rediculous!!!

All this water-cooling is making me chill!

I just picked up my copy of June 2008 CPC and its packed with Water-Cooled goodness. I may even give it a try myself as they make it look so easy. Didn't I see a pair of liquid-cooled underwear in the mag somewhere? or was that just a Dune flashback? That gives me an idea for a custom rig. The gaming PC you can wear and still look stupid but cold and refreshed at the sametime. I'm off to the drawing board then off to the Patent office before Ultra get in on it.

im sorry...

but PC components are becoming stupidly gimmicky. Corsair has shown that you can indeed have 2ghz DDR3 without having extravagant, useless cooling, so why would anyone want these other than as a showcase? and letting you overvolt by a measly 0.05V? yeah, that's real nice of OCZ. especially when they full well know that any overclocker worth their salt will push way past that.
