No plans for new Unreal game, says Epic

Epic says there are no plans for a single-player Unreal game

Introducing owners of 3dfx cards to shiny, reflective floors, the first Unreal game was a great showcase of PC graphics when it was released back in 1998. However, Epic says that it currently has no plans to make another single-player Unreal game.

In an interview with EuroGamer, Epic’s vice president Mark Rein explained that Epic has ‘no plans to do one today,’ when asked about making a follow-up to Unreal 2. He later added that Epic now has ‘Gears of War as our kind of vanguard, single-player graphic showcase type of game.’

‘I think we've been really happy with the multiplayer-oriented Unreal Tournament,’ explained Rein, who is also quite happy with the multiplayer game’s sales. ‘People get this crazy idea that if you don't sell five million units it isn't a success,’ said Rein, ‘but we heard today that we've shipped over 1.2 million units of UT3, not even including the Xbox 360 yet. We make good money on Unreal Tournament, and it's a good game that we love to make, and it's not a five-year-long production.’

Rein didn’t rule out making another single-player Unreal game in the future, though, saying, ‘I'm sure at some point there will be one.’ However, given how long it takes to develop a new game, and considering that Unreal Engine 3 has already been out for a while now, it’s unlikely to be any time soon.

Are you happy enough with Unreal Tournament III, or would you like to see a new single-player Unreal game based on the new engine too? Let us know your thoughts.

@NikoBellic

You wanna know "why they dont just make a decent game again, instead of relying of other devs to take advantage of their engine." Could the answer be royalties?!! Look how much it costs to license Unreal Engine 2 let alone Unreal Engine 3! That has to be discussed. Then look at how many companies have licensed Unreal Engine 3! Look at the commitment that EA has made, 5 games plus!! Also Crytek is following in these footsteps by aiming their new engine at consoles. They've also pledged no more PC exclusivity and are going multi-platform due to piracy! http://www.epicgames.com/ http://www.unrealtechnology.com/licensing.php?ref=terms http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=188087 http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=187981

Oh for christ sake..

I posted this on the Unreal/Epic forums a while back actually, whether there was going to be an Unreal 3. This is so disapointing, I loved Unreal and I enjoyed Unreal 2 - as much as I love Tournament I would like a single player game to engage in.

@Warrior24_7

I agree that it seems like a rediculous thing to go and do, plus i wanna know why they dont just make a decent game again, instead of relying of other devs to take advantage of their engine. i think Epic need a change with the management, And BIG time!, and then maybe, just maybe, we'll see them decent games making a come back (like UT2 of course)

Hmmm...

First Unreal engine 4 aimed at consoles first, now "Gears of War is the vanguard, single-player graphic showcase type of game"? Isn't Gears of War II a 360 exclusive now as it will NOT be going to PC?

What .... Unreal 2 was one of the best games I played... looked stunning and the weapons were so good... It was a shame that the best weapon wasn't received/used until the last level.... Really disappointed they're not making a sequel... GoW is good but it's different.... 3rd Person etc.
