Rumour control: Nehalem X58 chipset revealed

Posted at: 11:35am 12th May 2008 by James Morris

Leaked roadmap and motherboard photos show Intel’s next-gen architecture is bang on time

X58 Motherboard

As we recently reported, Intel’s P45 will be the last LGA775 chipset. Now further evidence has emerged that the four-year-old socket will be receiving its final payslip when P45’s successor arrives. According to Chinese news site Expreview, in the last quarter of 2008, Intel will be launching its first chipset for the brand new Nehalem processor architecture, and it will be called X58.

Nehalem will be a big technological leap forward. While Intel’s Core 2 CPUs have outperformed AMD’s recent Phenoms, in terms of design, Intel’s chips are far more traditional than its rivals, still requiring a discrete memory controller and using a Front Side Bus link to the memory. With its Opteron and Athlon 64 design, AMD brought the memory controller onto the CPU die, and replaced the Front Side Bus with HyperTransport. When Nehalem and its Bloomfield desktop variant arrive, Intel will be doing virtually the same thing.

The Nehalem microarchitecture will bring the memory controller on die as well, and will switch to a new bus called QuickPath Interconnect (formerly known as the Common System Interface). Triple-channel DDR3 will also make its debut with the X58 chipset, and some versions will integrate graphics on-die as well. To accommodate the greater variety of communications between the processor and motherboard, the desktop socket will almost double in pin count to LGA1366, although smaller sockets are also planned in 2009. The server variant of Nehalem is also expected to offer twice as many QPI buses and quad-channel memory, so will move to an even larger LGA1567 socket.

Expreview also has a sneak preview picture of a motherboard purported to be based on X58. It appears to lack the Northbridge found on all previous Intel-based boards, with no large chip near the CPU sporting heavy-duty active cooling. A smaller, more humbly cooled chip behind the expansion slots is likely to be the ICH10/R Southbridge.

So it appears that Nehalem is on track for the expected launch at the end of 2008. With the Bloomfield desktop version promising native quad-core and the return of Hyper-Threading for eight virtual cores, Christmas 2008 is shaping up to be a festival of very good cheer for computing enthusiasts.

I am thinking more long term when i say i want to save my wallet!, I understand that I may be able to save money now buying an intel product, but then what happens when AMD go bust and even the mainstream user can't get a computer cheaper than £1000 Due to there being no competition, I just like to think 3 steps ahead!!, and saving money now doesn't mean i'll save money in the future!

AMD arnt completely dead in the water, they still make for a better CPU in media centres and unless your heavily into your gaming they can still handle themselves. Hell i have a 939 4600+ and it still handles everything i throw at it no problem, including running crysis at high res alongside a 7900gtx...maybe someone will actually program something that utilises all of core2's power but for now its just overkill....

The intel chips are also cheaper...... I already did this comparison against someones forum thread under hardware section prooving that even the bigger intel chips are still cheap on the sub 70 pound range, 70-120 quid range .... Intel X58 FTW anyone? Im skipping any small upgrades and waiting for a review on these bad boys.. and going straight to them :D

socket size

The socket size of the 1567 socket would only have to be 40% bigger in linear dimensions than lga775 even if the pin size and spacing were the same.

two things,

first off, all AMD fags should go die... seriously, AMD sucks... hate to brake it to you but it does... second off, this is going to make intel chips even cheeper, ontop of the 50% cut from quad and duel cores only last month... intel have this market under a very tight grip, AMD are just like little kids trying to brake into a deadlocked safe gaurded by 7ft tall intel gaurds, with dogs! thats all i have to say on the matter... game over AMD, game over...

Yes, but, for the average punter who doesn't overclock, AMD's cheap dual-cores are good value. That appears to be AMD's target audience at the moment.

Comment by jdmorris1 at 10:21am 14th May 2008

E2160 overclocked would be better

Comment by pveater at 7:30pm 13th May 2008

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+

If you've only got around £50 to spend on a processor, the cheap AMD dual-cores actually give good bang-for-buck. But that is about the only sector where AMD has a valid price-performance argument at the moment.

Fan Boys are Funny

Hahahahaha whats wrong with some people seriously? Niko'AMD fan boy'Bellic says he will still buy AMD (bad decision) to save his wallet (even worse decision). How can buying an inferior product save money? Pound for pound Intel outperforms AMD currently which makes them much better value. Your not saving anything. If its purely a financial thing then why not buy a cheaper Core2, overclock it and still outperform AMD??? To suggest you buy AMD ''because i really want to see the competition make a come back'' is really really stupid. Oh dear.

Comment by pveater at 7:32am 13th May 2008

Intel have already started to lower prices on current CPU's

Intel have already started to cut prices of current CPU's, and damn fine they are too! No one in there right mind would buy any AMD CPU today. Intel CPU's are cheaper and perform better FACT. The point I was making about AMD needing to do something is because they REALLY do need to do something or the gap will just get too big!

Comment by crazyceo at 10:36pm 12th May 2008

@ Carzyceo

AMD need to come up with a whole new architecture before they stand a chance of competing with Intel again. Tweaks to existing architectures just won't cut the mustard.

Triple channel RAM sounds interesting. I'm assuming there's be a dual channel option is the BIOS for those who only buy two sticks of RAM. If that's the case it'll be interesting to see what difference it makes to benchmarks.

8 cores

The LGA1567 will accommodate CPUs with up to 8 cores... plus Hyper-Threading. Makes you wonder what the next Skulltrail will be like!

Comment by jdmorris1 at 2:53pm 12th May 2008

INeedAnXPS600Now...

1567 is just over double the amount of connectors the 775-pin socket has, so at worst it will be doouble in size. Do you honeestly think any cpu manufacturer would release a cpu that big? (well if it did, I'd want to be able to control satellites with it) Intel have reduced the die-sizes quite a bit so it's not ridiculous to consider there might even be shrinkage in the overall socket size (by placing the pins closer together and perhaps using slightly slimmer pins). While this won't shrink the ACTUAL size of the cpu it will reduce the spacing etc so you could probably double the dimensions of the existing socket 775, then work out 2/3 of that and that will possibly be the size of the new socket. Unless Intel have come up with a new linear socket...

Comment by EdArch at 1:55pm 12th May 2008

It is bigger

Follow the link in the story to the leaked shots of the CPU die. It is quite a bit bigger than LGA775, but as the motherboard pic shows the trace issue appears to have been dealt with. After all, AMD's Socket F has nearly that many pins already.

Comment by jdmorris1 at 1:19pm 12th May 2008

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LGA 1366 and 1567!!!!!!!!!!!! Just how big will the new sockets be? (cm x cm). I don't know about everyone else but I can't think how they're gonna fit somthing that size and with that many connections onto a standard ATX MoBo and still have room for all the essentials, let alone the bells and whistles! 1366 traces to the CPU (or 1567) each at 0.5 mm wide = 683mm wide. + the size of a CPU socket = taking up the entire MoBo!

Comment by INeedAnXPS600Now at 1:07pm 12th May 2008

MMMmmmm...

i think DudQuitter has a good point, i guess i'll have to stick to buying AMD CPUs that extra bit longer just until they get a bit closer to the competition, if you are wondering why, its because i really want to see the competition make a come back and save my wallet from suffering from too much... Plus AMDs CPUs can do a good job for the time being.

Comment by NikoBellic at 1:00pm 12th May 2008

RE:crazyceo

But the question is will Intel be prepared to notch down their CPU prices to make room for Nehelem?

Comment by DudQuitter at 12:57pm 12th May 2008

Look at the little details...

I've seen pictures of this board elsewhere and you can see some tiny little things that stand out... like the skull and crossbones next to the PCI-E x16 Slot... there are a couple of others but you can't see them on that picture...

Comment by RedFlames at 12:54pm 12th May 2008

Just when you thought.....

Just when you thought AMD would get a break, Intel appear to be ready with their next big rollout. I know I've said this before but AMD really need to get their act together. Not only is their current product over priced and under performing, we have no sign of any developement release for any improvements or replacements. Glad to see Intel still actually working on improvement even with no competition to push them.
