New GPUs apparently promise fast frame rates at high resolutions, while still boasting power to spare for physics and even ray tracing
While there are plenty of dodgy-looking tables of specs wishlists for new GPUs on the Web, it’s not often you get a good rumour that looks like the real deal. However, Tom’s Hardware in Taiwan has just leaked a whole load of photos of ATI’s forthcoming Radeon HD 4850 and 4870 cards, all of which look pretty legitimate, as well as a few presentation slides concerning the details.
Unfortunately, there’s nothing about the number of stream processors, although previous rumours point towards the cards having 480 stream processors. However, the slides say that the cards will support both GDDR3 and GDDR5 memory, will have a 256-bit memory interface and will also support 24x CFAA (custom filter anti-aliasing), which the slides say will allow you to smooth out the edges of ‘everything from grass to facial features.’
As well as this, the slides also say that the cards will support HDMI and will be capable of 7.1 surround sound for copy-protected movie discs too. Although there’s no mention of clock speeds or the aforementioned stream processors, if the slides are to be believed, then AMD / ATI is extremely confident in the power of these new beasties. As well as promising a new ‘TeraScale’ graphics engine that will ‘deliver high resolutions and frame rates,’ the slides also say that the GPUs will have power to spare. This, according to the slides, will allow the GPU to process physics and AI, and even ray tracing calculations.
The power requirements are also listed, with a 450W PSU with one six-pin PCI-E connector listed for the single-slot Radeon HD 4850, and a 500W PSU with two six-pin PCI-E connectors for the dual-slot 4870. As expected, both GPUs are listed as supporting DirectX 10.1 and PCI-E 2.0, as well as Quad CrossFire. Of course, this is still all in the rumour mill at the moment, but it looks as though ATI has a lot of confidence in its next GPU architecture if this rumour is to be believed.
AMD/ATI has been releasing cards with display port with the current range, would they go back on that and only have DVI->HDMI No HMI, no display port = fake pic.

Well getting closer to the official june 17th but hopefully we will get confirmation of release during the computex show eh.As it will be interesting to see the HD4870 with DDR5 and then what happens when put against the Nvidia G260 based cards as a chap mentioned earlier the G260 is rumoured to have 1gb of DDR3 but the HD4870 is going to have DDR5 and 512mb of it.Very interesting to see if the 512mb of DDR5 with 5X the bandwidth of DDR3 will fair against the 1gb of lesser bandwidth ram. Also the power usuages of both new cards both on idle and full load during gaming.I personally cant wait to see what happens as good competition between ATI and Nvidia again which is all good news for gamers on pc's as then price competition will come in too. Mike
im hoping amd/ati can deliver with this card. if this card is good, revenue will increase for them and it will supply $$$$ for r&d for new processors within the amd department. im a person who likes variety and i hope we can all have a choice of what gpu or processor we wish to buy. i wouldnt really like to live in a world where intel and nvidia are the sole supply for said hardware. im rooting for you ati/amd.
Just saw this at Tom's hardware http://www.tomshardware.com/news/amd-ati-radeon,5514.html
ATI have brought out great cards in the past. The 3870x2 is a good card, but ATI never back there cards up with great drivers. A F1 car will go well with me behind the wheel, but it will go a hell of a lot faster with Hamilton behind the wheel.
Wow, looks like pants are truly tangled. mbass32's got the right idea, but if you want something to argue about try anticipating the result of the 4870 having twice the bandwidth and half the memory of the G280...oh and a totally different architecture. Here's an idea - Nvidia are backing off SLI and ATI are doing the opposite for Crossfire. So one guess would be that the 280 will have more raw grunt, but the 4870 will give it a good kicking in the cool'nquiet, power-efficiency and value4money stakes. But a month or so after that, when the 4870x2 arrivesl.....
I can't wait, another amazing ATI graphics card to take on and beat Nvidia. Where are sarcasm tags when you need them ?
Just to help "sorry like" realise that he again doesn't realise his arse from his elbow, he quotes 256 bit memory interface, yet again wrong, as ATI's ring bus is 256 bit bi-directional ie its 256 bit both ways and is actually the same as 512 bit bus. Really i wish people like him would actualy learn to read and understand before they make silly childish comments about technology.
Well it sounds like a beast and so does nvidia's new G200 based card so only tests by official testers like custom pc mag or other reliable tester should be taken. As for the person who said" sorry like" he clearly doesn't know his arse from his elbow. As ati's 55nm new card with ddr5 will use less power than Nvidia's enlarged die with .65nm production. Also DDR5 is far less power hungry and has better data rates and higher speeds than any highly clocked DDR3 will be and as for DDR4 its been proven to be a waste of time and effort as it requires alot of power for sod all gain. Also you can see who the fanboys are by their stupid ripping other makers appart comments. How about we just wait a few more days and we will all see who is best performing card and best power consumption eh.
@Ziggy & Lightning_Pete Such a tool. Why the need to be a fanboy, this isnt a console forum.
that is a bit surprising. Seems like a step back rather than forward
Hi new poster wasimsouk here. great to join this great community. If =you follow corporate history theres an old trick here(TI) Release a press release about your new as yet unreleased product, so you can win the vapourware prize from nvidia. I like ati, I think If they have a winner amd has much to smile about. However, with that inetrview(i think 3 weks ago?_ With amds cto(or something like that, i thought he was rehashing propaganda, not telling us wthe what and why of the new tech. Ati seem to be more staritforward. Don't get me wrong, I am a amd fan, but If all this is just a fancy dress party whos gonna care about amd/ati later? probably me but i'll be the only onw REALLY hope that ati lifts the stakes so we can have another fun mhz war heres hoping
Im sensing a little bit of jelousy around here... hows about we wait and see instead of being fanboyz!!, plus you Nvidia fanboys may just need this competition too, because Nvidia needs that kick up the ass, otherwise we'll never see a decent GPU with stable drivers!!.... so stop killing the hype and let people have their moment!.
But this is well dissapointing... a 256 bit memory interface? ROFL.... stupid load of stream processors like ther last bunch of pap... ROFL... Powered by only 1x6pin pci-e and 2x6pin pci-e, sounds like these cards are underpowered compared to nvidia because they arent super duper cards... ROFL... and when was the last time an Ati card power efficient and provided blistering frame rates in crysis at low resolutions? Roflcopter.. I reckon these might just tip the 8000' series nvidia cards at best... where the 9800 and gx2 varieties are way ahead... *long extended sigh*
Why is everyone so excited about this? This is nothing we haven't known about for the past 2-3 months, and nothing really new from the r600 architecture on which it is made. You think Nvidia are rehashing old cards, just look at these two. Nvidia at least have new architecture with their GTX 260 + 280, which are obviously going to stomp all over these.
Nice to have an upgrade path from my 3850, but I'll just save up until I can afford the faster card when the time comes. The PSU upgrade will come first.
Now this is what i wanted from ATI all along... YAYYyyyyyyy!!!!!!! We've got the Competition Back!!!!!!.... finally... Right... I'm of down the pub.... whos round is it?...
hopefully this give nvidia a slap in the face hope ati are back in the game with top dog card like back with the x1900 series :P
Radeon 4870 will cost around $329 while 4850 will be $229. 4850 will be targeted to complete with 9800GTX while 4870 will be to X2. Judge by the price though, Im not expecting huge performance gains.
Nvidia has been sitting on its ass for over 2 years now, its time to teach them a lesson for releasing the same model / milking the market. if this card has near performance of the up coming 9900, i'd go for Radeon.
I hope they perform as they say, usually when a company advertises something as much as ATI has for these cards, it's good news as they are confident. Looking forward too them.
