A 3DMark Vantage score from the Radeon HD 4850, and a GPU-Z screenshot from a GeForce GTX 280
Nvidia and AMD must have a love / hate relationship with big tech shows. On the one hand, they get a chance to make a big song and dance about their latest products. On the other hand, however, some of your board partners seem to be happily showing off your secret future tech to roving journalists. As a fine example, VR-Zone claims to have had a quick play with a Radeon HD 4850 and a GeForce GTX 280 while nosing around Computex in Taiwan.
The Radeon HD 4850 photos are out of focus, but they look very similar to the shots we saw earlier last month. The GPU’s stock speed is apparently 625MHz, but VR-Zone claims that this was easily raised to 700MHz, after which the card score P6466 in 3DMark Vantage. Unfortunately, we don’t know which CPU was used for testing, so we have no direct comparison to this result. However, a 512MB GeForce 9800 GTX only scored P5685 on our Core 2 Extreme QX6700 test rig in the latest issue of Custom PC.
Meanwhile, the site also claims to have snapped some good close-ups of the GeForce GTX 280, which looks remarkably similar to the GeForce 9800 GTX. The new photos also show the six-pin and eight-pin power connectors, which we first saw in some leaked photos earlier last month, as well as connectors for 3-way SLI. Perhaps more interestingly, though, VR-Zone also has a GPU-Z screenshot from the GTX 280, showing 240 stream processors at 1,296MHz, 1GB of 1,107MHz GDDR3 memory and a 602MHz core clock. There’s also a 512-bit memory bus, allowing for much more room than the 256-bit bus on Nvidia’s current top-end 9-series GPUs.
Im building a PC over the summer, but now im really confused!!! Wait for the new nvidia card? Buy XFX 9800GTX black edition OR buy a 9600GT in the mean time till the new card comes out??? I love and hate computers and technology. YOu can never be ahead! :D
REALLY looking forward to the GTX 280. Saved up £250 and the parents have pledged to pay the rest (exchange for exams etc.). Rather frustrated by the 8 pin connector, but one of my mates has said he'll but my OCZ 600w PSU off me for £60 so i'll put in the other £40 for the Be Quiet! 650w Dark power Pro. Twill be nice to have a modular psu too
I agree with Combatus about the 4850 3DMV score, very impressive considering CPC's test rig for the comparative 9800GTX score is no slouch. 4870X2 should be quite a nice package I reckon... providing ATI have sorted the AA issue.

Let's not forget that ATi have been great at shouting new and exciting data on their new products. Only to be hammered on the independent benchmarks. Also, Nvidia recently have been understating their performances or not giving any only to jump up and bite with some fantastic proven stats. The 9800 GTX is not the new card, it's a mid range card so the comparison isn't warranted here. There's still nothing touching the 9800 GX2 at present and they have been coming down in price over the last couple of months. I wouldn't be holding my breath for ATi to release a better card. Let's just wait for the CPC benchmark lab results before the ATi fanboys start cheering
Well its all well and good them saying they tested it briefly and clocked it upto 700 and it scored well by the looks of it, but if we had the system specs it would be better for us to compare the results. And being we dont know if the 4850 has less stream processors or not but we do know from brief info that the 4870 will be anywhere from 800 to 1ghz.So still some speculation, i would rather have proper results and specs of systems to see how good the 4850 is.
would be nice to see ATi return to form, bringing out some competitive hardware. But i think the main issue will still be, can they release decent drivers for their cards? This one hopes so.
Gossip appears to have got to the completely bonkers stage now! One minute the 4870 can't top the 8800 Ultra in 3DMV and looked to be slightly dissapointing now even the 4850 can trounce the 9800GTX... Hopefully the new cards will stick to the same story we've seen with Futuremark's new benchmark in that the results run much more parallel to actual game performance between the red and green teams. If the 4850 really can top the 9800GTX in games then this is very exciting indeed.
